Jaylen Brown Trade Stuns Fans as 76ers Eyed as NBA Title Contenders After Celtics Blockbuster
Are you sitting down, Philadelphia? You aren't going to believe this one.
The Sixers reportedly landed Jaylen Brown for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks on Wednesday, per ESPN's Shams Charania:
It is an absolutely stunning trade on multiple levels, which can be seen by the overall reaction:
Because this is probably the most stunning trade since the Los Angeles Lakers landed Luka Dončić, let's just do a second round of reaction. Nobody could believe this just happened:
The Sixers now have a core group of Brown, Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid and V.J. Edgecombe. That's pretty stacked, even taking into account the fact that Embiid will probably miss 30 or more games given his injury history.
Both Brown and Edgecombe are excellent two-way players—and free-agent signing Dean Wade is an impact defender as well—which should help cover for some of Maxey's defensive deficiencies and Embiid's declining impact as a rim-protector.
On the offensive end, the Sixers now have three players who averaged 26 or more points per game last season, while Edgecombe averaged a respectable 16 per game as a rookie. If they jell and find a way to keep everybody involved—one would think there might be some heavy minutes staggering to aid in that process—the Sixers will be a nightmare to defend.
If nothing else, Brown is a pretty significant upgrade over the 36-year-old George.
As for the Celtics... well, it's harder to spin this positively for Boston. Maybe George stays healthy and vibes with Jayson Tatum. Maybe that 2028 Los Angeles Clippers pick that the Sixers currently own, which is likely to be the selection that conveys to Boston, ends up being a top-five selection. Maybe Brad Stevens has another move or two up his sleeve that makes the team's roster look more competitive in the 2026-27 season.
It's a lot of ifs, and if all of them aren't answered in a positive manner, this trade could look disastrous for Boston. Frankly, it already does. Time will tell why Boston felt the need to make it, but for now, Philly fans are pretty thrilled with the decision.
