Latest Jaylen Brown Trade Rumors Reveal Limited Interest in Celtics Star, GM Predicts Huge Discount
The Boston Celtics were aiming big in their trade aspirations for Jaylen Brown, but it appears there might not be a team willing to meet their price for the former Finals MVP.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday that teams aren't interested in giving up four first-rounders for Brown, with one general manager predicting the Celtics eventually will sell at a discount.
"I've been told they've asked multiple teams for up to four first-round picks, in some cases even more than that," Charania said on NBA Today (4:25 mark). "...I can't find a team right now that is willing, at this moment, to give up that amount of draft capital. So then it just becomes, are Brad Stevens and that front office fine trading away Jaylen Brown for potentially less than that. I had one GM say, '40 cents on the dollar.'"
ESPN's Brian Windhorst described Boston as "very motivated" to trade Brown.
"They're offering him everywhere," Windhorst said on the Rich Eisen Show. "I'm not in the Celtics' offices, so I can't say for sure, but I've heard the Celtics attached to—I'm not even gonna put a number on it—many, many teams."
Windhorst also noted that, after missing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Celtics have shifted towards asking for picks for Brown rather than players.
"Which leads me to believe that they're examining a short-term future where they're not trying to win a championship," Windhorst said. "Because you don't take an All-NBA player and trade him for draft picks and say we're gonna be the same team."
Brown's trade value would seemingly be high after the season he just had. Without Jayson Tatum for most of the year, he put up 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, marking the best statistical year of his career.
But even after a tremendous year, Boston seemingly can't get the return it's hoping for in a Brown trade.
Whether that will change the Celtics' thoughts on trading Brown remains to be seen, but it's safe to say that Boston's desire to trade him would make for an awkward situation if Brown remains with the team.
Based on Windhorst's report, it sounds like the Celtics have been in contact with plenty of teams. One team that has been linked to Brown for a while now is the Portland Trail Blazers, but they reportedly have dropped out of the race after trading for Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant on Monday.
As free agency begins on Tuesday, other teams will begin bolstering their rosters on the open market, which only puts more pressure on the Celtics to find a suitor for Brown soon.
