Mauricio Pochettino Calls Out 'Petty' Questions After USMNT's World Cup Loss vs. Türkiye
USA men's national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino was not happy with the media following Thursday's 3-2 loss to Türkiye in the final match of group play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for both clubs.
During his post-match press conference, Pochettino called out what he deemed "petty" questions and concerns about the loss even though the U.S. had already clinched Group D and a spot in the knockout round:
"Making history is winning the World Cup. It's not winning three matches only within the World Cup. I don't really understand. It's a little bit petty if you will -- you're thinking a little too small. You're telling me you could make history — what does it mean to win three matches if you lose the next one?"

Pochettino seemed particularly perturbed by the heavy focus on the Thursday's result rather than the overall accomplishment of winning the group.
"The mood is like we [are going] home tonight and Türkiye is staying," he said. "I need to [remind] you and everyone that we won the group. Sorry guys, we won."
There were indications going into the match that the Americans weren't necessarily going to put their pedal to the medal and risk a potential injury leading up to the knockout round.
Pochettino used nine new starters against Türkiye compared to the June 19 matchup with Australia.
Weston McKennie was the only U.S. player who started all three games in the group stage.
Even with running out a largely new lineup, the United States had a chance to come away with a draw. Kaan Ayhan provided the game-winning goal for Türkiye in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
The most encouraging thing to come out of the loss for Team USA was the return of Christian Pulisic after missing the win over Australia due to a calf injury. He entered in the 58th minute and got off three shots (two on goal).
Team USA won its group for the first time since 2010. Its plus-four goal differential is tied for the ninth-best in the tournament thus far.
Next up for the United States is a showdown with Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 at Levi's Stadium.
