Lionel Messi, Truly the GOAT

Argentina's talisman became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history on Monday—and then added a second to the mix—as Argentina beat Austria 2-0 and all but wrapped up the top spot in Group J.

Messi's first goal surpassed Germany's Miroslav Klose in the men's game, while the second one pushed him clear of Brazil's Marta.

And he could have had a hat trick were it not for a shocking penalty miss in the first half:

Even the GOAT is human. A different sort of human, it must be said, but human nonetheless.

Five goals through two World Cup games is on another level. It must be noted that Argentina have now recorded two straight clean sheets, creating a fantastic defensive backbone behind their keystone.

But it's Lionel Messi's World Cup thus far, and the rest of us are just enjoying the show.

Mbappé Shines in Dominant Win

France had no trouble with Iraq as it continues its push to get back to the World Cup Final.

After scoring a pair of goals in France's World Cup opener, Kylian Mbappé got back to work early on Monday, scoring in the 14th minute from outside of the box.

Unfortunately, the weather was a factor on Monday as the match saw a lengthy two-hour delay. That didn't stop Mbappé's momentum, though, as he tacked on another goal in the 54th minute.

Ousmane Dembélé then put another in the net for France to just about put things out of reach.

Mbappé was eyeing the hat trick and had several late opportunities, but ultimately couldn't find a third goal.

With the win, France secured its spot in the Round of 32 and is in good position to win the group.

Haaland's Brace Leads Norway to Knockouts

Norway became the second team in the group to clinch a spot in the knockout round with its win over Senegal.

Erling Haaland continued his tremendous World Cup performance, scoring a pair of goals in the win.

Marcus Pedersen got things started for Norway with a goal late in the first half, and Haaland picked up his first early in the second half.

Senegal's Ismaïla Sarr cut the lead back down to one, but Haaland responded moments later with his second goal of the night.

Ismaïla Sarr put some pressure on Norway with a goal in extra time, but Senegal ultimately didn't have enough to mount the late comeback.

The win sets up an exciting match between France and Norway on Friday. While both teams have secured a spot in the Round of 32, that match will determine the group winner.

Algeria Mounts Late Comeback

Thanks to a pair of second-half goals, Algeria won their first FIFA World Cup match in 12 years on Monday night, beating Jordan 2-1.

Jordan—playing in their first World Cup and seeking their first-ever World Cup win—got on the board first Monday, as midfielder Nizar Al-Rashdan beat Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane with a low shot in the 36th minute:

While Jordan carried that 1-0 lead late into the second half, Algeria finally broke through in the 69th minute when Nadhir Benbouali scored on a header off a set piece:

The momentum was entirely in Algeria's favor at that point, and they took advantage by scoring the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute when Amine Gouiri found the ball amid a scramble and put it in the back of the net:

Algeria's second goal came off a set piece as well, and defending in those situations proved to be Jordan's undoing, as their attempt at a first World Cup match win fell short.

Jordan was eliminated from the tournament with Monday's loss, but they will have one more opportunity to get their first win before heading home.

Doing so will be easier said than done against group winner Argentina on Saturday, but since Argentina has already won Group J, they could potentially sit some of their stars, including Lionel Messi.

As for Algeria, they will look to secure their spot in the Round of 32 when they take on Austria on Saturday night.
