HT: Paraguay 1 - Turkiye 0

Turkey v Paraguay -World Cup

Wanting to exorcise the demons that have haunted them since their opening match, Paraguay did so and then some in the first half, but not without some controversy.Ā

Compared to their opening match against the United States, Paraguay certainly played a more cohesive brand of football, even if they only racked up two shots on target. However, defensively, that's where they stood out.Ā

Led by a potent attack featuring Julio Enciso and eventual first-half goalscorer Matias Galarza, the Paraguayans struck quickly, scoring just two minutes into the match.Ā

Still, Türkiye continued to push, even without a natural striker leading the front, as they looked for an equalizer before the half ended.

However, despite the amount of sheer technical ability, Türkiye's midfield maestros, Hakan Ƈalhanoğlu and Ardu Güler, failed to break through Paraguay's stubborn backline.Ā

Additionally, a strong showing by Paraguayan defenders Gustavo Gomez and Omar Alderete stymied Türkiye's attack, which certainly frustrated the European side even further.

Though a double doink from Türkiye nearly spoiled Paraguay's first-half masterclass, La Albirroja held firm.

Unfortunately, a red card issued to Miguel Almiron late in first half stoppage time due to a new FIFA directive stating that players who cover their mouths will indeed get sent off, could spoil Paraguay's free-flowing state.Ā

The second half is sure to be a good one.

We have late-night footy at the World Cup, folks! Both Turkiye and Paraguay look to bounce back from disappointing losses in their opening matches. Who ya' got?

FT - Brazil 3, Haiti 0

FBL-WC-2026-MATCH29-BRA-HAI

Haiti have become the first team eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.Ā

After losing a tight game to Scotland in their opening contest, Haiti fell 3-0 to Brazil on Friday night, leaving them with zero points in Group C and without hope of being able to finish anywhere other than dead last in their group after next week's final matchday.Ā

Still, that Haiti managed to qualify for the tournament at all is a major accomplishment. Playing in just their second-ever World Cup after last qualifying in 1974, Haiti became the only Caribbean nation to have qualified for two different World Cups. They managed to get to the big show despite playing all of their home qualifying fixtures on neutral sites due to unrest on their own shores. Their national stadium was even taken over and vandalized by gangs in 2024 — and they haven't played a true home game since 2021.

So, then, Haitian fans will remember this World Cup, even if it ended earlier than they would've hoped.

For Brazil, Friday's affair was a straightforward attacking exercise. Their star-studded attack proved too much for Haiti. A first-half brace from Matheus Cunha and a strike from Vinicius Jr. gave Carlo Ancelotti's team a comfortable lead at halftime. Outside of winger Raphinha exiting before halftime with a potential hamstring injury, it was a smooth showing for Brazil. They'll just be hoping that whatever is ailing the FC Barcelona man doesn't keep him down for long.

64' - IT'S ENDRICK TIME šŸ‡§šŸ‡·

Brazil's attacking depth is nuts.

63' - ALISSON PRESERVES THE CLEAN SHEET šŸ’Ŗ

Brazil still have that 3-0 lead!

46' - The second half is UNDERWAY! šŸ‡§šŸ‡·šŸ‡šŸ‡¹

What magic do Brazil have in store?

HT - Brazil 3, Haiti 0

Brazil v Haiti: Group C - FIFA World Cup 2026

It felt inevitable, didn't it? Brazil lead Haiti by three goals at the break after plenty of one-way traffic in Philadelphia.Ā

While Haiti started the game with plenty of aggression, they couldn't slow down Brazil's star-studded attack. Haiti, facing elimination if they fail to make a miracle comeback in the second period, didn't shy away from physicality. Carlens Arcus picked up a yellow card inside the first five minutes of the match and Danley Jean Jacques went in hard on Vinicius Jr. — we also had some time wasting with veteran goalkeeper Johny Placide taking too long on an early goal kick and conceding a corner kick as a result.

Brazil, with Vinicius Jr. and Raphinha on the wings and Matheus Cunha starting up top in place of Igor Thiago, proved too difficult to stop in the attacking third. It was Cunha who put Brazil up 1-0 in the 23rd minute when he cleaned up a rebound from a Vinicius Jr. strike. Cunha went on to double the lead, adding a second goal with an emphatic effort in the 36th minute. Vinicius Jr. eventually made it 3-0 just before the break.

If there was a negative for Brazil, it's that Raphinha exited in the 40th minute with an injury. While he won't be missed much in this game, he may well be missed later in the tournament.

Can Haiti contain Brazil's firepower?!

FT - Scotland 0, Morocco 1

Scotland v Morocco

Morocco have one foot in the next round after grinding out a first victory of the tournament and a second positive result.

It was also a second match where the Atlas Lions appeared to lose some momentum following an extremely bright start. But in these tournaments, that's nitpicking. As we saw with the United States earlier against Australia, sometimes these games just have to be managed.

Mohamed Ouahbi's side certainly did that, holding the Scots one effort on target and never really letting their European foes turn their relentless work rate into any real threat. And it was Morocco that looked more likely to score the next goal in the match's very late stages against a visibly fatigued opponent.

Now Morocco watch as Brazil take on Haiti later tonight, hoping the upstart Caribbeans can at least keep it close since Group C could very well go down to goal differential.

Scotland fans may leave Foxborough griping about a couple of non-penalty decisions, though both would've been extremely soft if given. And their team will face a difficult decision of just how to approach their finale against Brazil.

A point against the Seleção would more likely than not put them in the last 32. At the same time, the difference between a close loss and a blowout could ultimately prove the key to qualifying for the knockout phase.

82' - Scotty got HOTTY after this 😠

52' - GREAT save by Gunn 🧤

Scotland staying in the game thanks to this stop.

HT - Scotland 0, Morocco 1

Scotland v Morocco

Perhaps no one has two better finishes so far this tournament than Ismael Saibari after he again has his side in front, this time with Morocco preserving the lead through halftime.

In the second minute, he absolutely demolished a half volley from relatively close range as poor Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn had to stand and wonder what the heck just happened. That followed a peach of a chip over Brazil's Alisson early in Morocco's 1-1 draw in the Meadowlands last Saturday.

That was the only effort on target for either side. Scotland began to come into it late, but it was mostly Morocco's half on the pitch even if it's always the Tartan Army's match in the stands.

FT - United States 2, Australia 0

USA v Australia: Group D - FIFA World Cup 2026

Another definitive victory puts USA in complete control of Group D. Despite conceding possession during stretches of the second half, they remained solidified defensively to prevent Australia from coming back. Several key players stepped up to ensure USA would stay composed against an opponent who wanted to rattle them physically and mentally.

They nearly started the second half with authority after Balogun got behind the Australian defense with an instinctive run after a terrific ball from Tyler Adams. Parma's Alessandro Circati tracked back to do just enough in preventing the dynamic striker from adding to his tournament goal total. Balogun's pace caused problems all match long for the Socceroos.

Australia wasted their first excellent opportunity in the match in the 62nd minute. Two substitutes combined with Cristian Vopato being found at the edge of the box by the rapid Nestory Irankunda who found space down the right flank off a well-orchestrated attack in transition. The good sequence was wasted with a poor shot curled by Vopato that went well over the bar.

USA started to look uneasy playing out of the back, leading to one careless high turnover. Australia was unable to capitalize on that moment with a tame shot from versatile midfielder Connor Metcalfe being easily saved. Manager Tony Popovic used four of his substitutions in the first 16 minutes of the second half. That included bringing on both goal scorers from their 2-0 win over Turkiye. It did lead to improvement in winning back possession and looking more promising going forward.

Soaking up pressure while defending a lead is something USA will have to be comfortable doing if they make a deep run. They did exactly that, led by an all-action performance by Adams. The workhorse midfielder made several key defensive contributions between headed clearances, ball recoveries, and interceptions. Combining his impressive effort with Chris Richards and Tim Ream being well-positioned to make necessary clearances, USA's defensive nucleus was pivotal in earning a clean sheet.

Despite being more controlled than aggressive in the second half, the USA showed maturity against an Australian side that doesn't hesitate to get physical. They didn't lose control after a few skirmishes. Matt Freese was never in danger of conceding. These are positives coming out of a subdued second half. Most importantly, they advance to the knockout stage as Christian Pulisic can take more time to recover from a calf injury.

HT: United States 2 - Australia 0

USA v Australia: Group D - FIFA World Cup 2026

There is no stopping USA… at least for now. They have been in command with crisp passing, explosive runs, and resolute defending. Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest combined early to get USA into a steady rhythm. Dest continues to be brimming with confidence after a terrific performance against Paraguay. The emphasis on attacking both wings equally paid off early and emphatically.

Folarin Balogun continues to be a nightmare for defenders to contain. His ability to shield the ball against center backs and turn with blistering pace gives USA a dimension not many teams can get from their number nine. His burst down the left wing led to him sending a low cross into the middle, which led to pure chaos for Australia's back line. Center back Cameron Burgess couldn't handle the pressure, as his attempted clearance ended up in his own net.

The USA's constant pressure forced Australia into errors as they struggled to build up any sort of possession. It's becoming more evident that Mauricio Pochettino's identity is being firmly established within the team. The pressing, quick transitions, and creating attacks with both fullbacks flying down the flanks are all things you can appreciate when watching this invigorated USA team.

Australia looked dangerous a few times, but they have been caught a step behind on too many occasions trying to keep pace, resulting in multiple yellow cards. Not being able to win many ground duels has put them in difficult positions. Playing under constant duress, they were bound to concede again, albeit in another unfortunate way.

On a set piece, Dest blasted a shot at the center of the box that took a wicked deflection. Alex Freeman was first to pounce on the ball to capitalize on a golden opportunity. It was a well-deserved goal for the right back, who won several of those ground duels and made key tackles. The USA is in prime position to take full control of Group D. It will be interesting to see how they sustain their high-intensity levels after an incredibly impressive first half.
