Sweden 5, Tunisia 1

Sweden have some attacking firepower. That much was evident on Sunday night.

The Swedes smashed Tunisia 5-1 in their World Cup opener, with a brace from Yasin Ayari and goals from Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Mattias Svanberg.

Sweden have a tough task ahead of them, drawn into a group with the Netherlands and Japan. They'll take on the former on Saturday, June 20 at 1 p.m. ET, while Tunisia will face Japan that same day at noon ET.

Côte d'Ivoire 1, Ecuador 0

In one of the most open and chaotic games of this year's World Cup, Côte d'Ivoire defeated Ecuador 1-0 on Amad Diallo's goal in the 89th minute.

This was a game that was far more exciting and frenetic than its scoreline would suggest.

Côte d'Ivoire finished with 15 shots (four on goal) and hit the post once. They were fantastic on the counter, using pace and ambition up the pitch to test Ecuador's backline consistently.

But Ecuador were no slouches, with 12 shots (one on goal) while hitting the woodwork three times. Côte d'Ivoire had an xG (expected goals) of 1.68, while Ecuador sat at 1.03.

The result was perhaps a touch harsh on Ecuador, but take nothing away from Côte d'Ivoire, who were deserved winners in arguably the most fun game thus far in this year's tournament.

It only gets tougher for the African side, however, as they'll take on Germany on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. Ecuador takes on Curaçao that same day at 8 p.m. ET.

Japan 2, Netherlands 2

What a game.

Daichi Kamada's goal in the 88th minute secured a crucial 2-2 draw for Japan against the Netherlands, helping them secure a point against one of the better sides at this year's World Cup.

Twice the Dutch took the lead in this contest, first on Virgil van Dijk's tally in the 51st minute and later on Crysencio Summerville's goal in the 51st minute.

But twice the Japanese had an answer, with Keito Nakamura finding the back of the net in the 57th minute before Kamada's evener.

Up next for the Dutch will be a clash with Sweden on Saturday, June 20 at 1 p.m. ET, while the Japanese will face Tunisia that same day at noon ET.

Germany 7, Curaçao 1

Curaçao will always have Livano Comenencia's goal to remember from the country's first-ever World Cup match.

The FC Zürich brought the team level in the 21st minute.

Alas, the Cinderella story didn't last much longer. Nico Schlotterbeck headed in from a corner in the 38th minute to put Germany on top again.

From there, Die Mannschaft didn't look back.

Kai Havertz scored from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of added time in the first half before Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav added goals in the second half. Havertz completed a brace in the 88th minute, which brought the scoring frenzy to a close.

Overall, the match was as one-sided as many expected coming in. Curaçao is the smallest country to ever qualify for the World Cup, and it's going to be overmatched in each of its three group fixtures.

At least the most difficult one is out of the way with Ecuador and the Côte d'Ivoire ahead.

Australia 2, Türkiye 0

With just one match in the books, Australia may already have a foot in the knockout stages for the second successive World Cup.

The Socceroos jumped ahead early on Türkiye with a goal from Nestory Irankunda in the 27th minute. That capped off a rapid counterattack:

Minutes later, goalkeeper Patrick Beach made a sprawling save to deny an equalizer:

Connor Metcalfe provided some needed breathing room deep into the second half. His low effort found the bottom corner of the net to double Australia's lead:

Tony Popovic's squad executed its game plan to perfection. Australia prevailed despite only finishing with 30 percent possession, and it had four shots on target to eight for Türkiye.

When as many as three countries can advance out of a group, earning three points goes a long way toward booking a place in the round of 32.
