Jalen Brunson Injured in NBA Finals Game 1, Latest Updates on Knicks Star's Status vs. Spurs

Scott PolacekJun 3, 2026

The 2026 NBA Finals got off to an inauspicious start for the New York Knicks when star guard Jalen Brunson suffered an apparent knee injury during the opening quarter of Wednesday's Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs.

While he initially grabbed at his knee and limped to the locker room, he returned and led his team to a 105-95 victory.

He returned to the bench to start the second quarter, although he was still limping before he checked back into the contest and eventually took over in crunch time on his way to 30 points.

Knicks head coach Mike Brown provided an update after the game and said, "Jalen's tough as nails. To me, he didn't seem like he had any effect afterwards. ... I think he's okay."

It essentially goes without saying that the Knicks are going to need Brunson to win this series.

After all, he is the leader of everything they do on the offensive end thanks to his outside shooting, ability to make plays off the bounce, physicality when he is attacking the lane and capable facilitating when opposing defenses collapse on him.

Brunson was an All-NBA Second-Team selection this season and averaged 26.0 points, 6.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game.

He has been even better at times in the postseason and entered Wednesday's contest with per-game averages of 26.9 points and 6.6 assists. He was the Eastern Conference Finals MVP during the win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

While the Knicks do not have anyone else on the roster who can replicate what Brunson does as their leader who consistently has the ball in his hands and is asked to make all the most important plays in crunch time, they can turn to the combination of Jose Alvarado and Miles McBride off the bench.

Still, Brunson's status will be a major storyline throughout the Finals.
