New Knicks Rumors on Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet's Contracts in Free Agency amid NBA Finals Run
The New York Knicks are expected to bring back both Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet after the team's first trip to the NBA Finals in 27 years, ESPN's Tim Bontemps reported Thursday.
According to Bontemps, both Robinson and Shamet "will likely be on two-year deals as the Knicks are likely going to go well into the second apron next season and the following anyway, before needing to duck back out."
The news comes after New York Post's Stefan Bondy reported earlier this month that NBA sources saw the Sacramento Kings as "a threat" to sign Robinson in free agency.
Bontemps projected Robinson's two-year deal with the Knicks will be worth more than the mid-level exception of just over $15 million annually.
The Knicks were under the first luxury tax apron this season, per Spotrac. That is set to change this fall. Spotrac projects the Knicks to have just $3.5 million in space under the first apron, and $16.5 million under the second, before re-signing Robinson or Shamet.
Shamet, who is playing on a one-year, $2.3 million deal, and Robinson, who is under $12.95 million cap hit in the final season of his expiring four-year contract, are both set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason.
Robinson averaged 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in under 20 minutes per night during the regular season.
He has helped the Knicks reach the Finals by allowing the team to run a double-big lineup while leading all postseason shooters with a 73.7 percent scoring rate from the field.
Shamet, who averaged 9.3 points while coming off the bench during the regular season, has also been an efficient shooter while coming off the bench during the Knicks' playoff run.
He's shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 60 percent from deep while averaging 5.7 points in 13 minutes per postseason game.
The Knicks already have their core five players signed through next season in Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart.
Miles McBride, Pacome Dadiet and Tyler Kolek are also signed through next season, while Jose Alvarado holds a player option for next season.
Re-signing Robinson and Shamet could allow the Knicks to run things back next spring with the same roster that has brought the team on their deepest playoff run in almost three decades.
The Knicks will first turn their attention to the Western Conference Finals, where the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs are still fighting for the last spot in the NBA Finals. The Thunder hold a 3-2 lead heading into Thursday night's Game 6 in San Antonio.
