New 76ers Rumors Reveal Elton Brand's Future and Top Candidates for Daryl Morey's Replacement
Philadelphia 76ers general manager Elton Brand is still operating in his current role after president of basketball operations Daryl Morey was fired on May 12, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
"There have likewise been suggestions that current Sixers general manager Elton Brand will eventually be offered a new role elsewhere in the organization, but for now I'm told Brand continues to scout for the team as it prepares for next month's draft," Stein reported Monday.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia is targeting four candidates to replace Morey.
Per Stein, the list includes Cleveland Cavaliers executive Mike Gansey, Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd, Phoenix Mercury general manager Nick U'Ren and current 76ers assistant general manager Jameer Nelson.
Philadelphia is also "hopeful" to retain vice president of player personnel Prosper Karangwa despite receiving permission to speak with the Los Angeles Lakers, per Stein. The Dallas Mavericks have also shown interest in Karangwa.
As for Brand, he's served as Philadelphia's general manager since 2018.
Among the options to replace Morey, Nelson could be a top choice.
Tony Jones of The Athletic previously reported that Nelson was viewed as the "strongest internal candidate" to be hired. The 76ers promoted him to assistant general manager in May 2025.
Gansey was initially hired by the Cavaliers as an intern in basketball operations in 2011, steadily making his way up in their front office before he was promoted to general manager in 2022.
He was previously under consideration for the Chicago Bulls' head of basketball operations role, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
U'Ren operated as a manager of advance scouting and a special assistant to Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr from 2014-18 before joining the team's front office under former executive Bob Myers.
U'Ren went on to become general manager of the Mercury in 2023. Phoenix compiled a 27-17 record last season, advancing to the WNBA Finals.
Lloyd spent 13 seasons with the Chicago Bulls organization and 10 seasons with the Orlando Magic front office before joining the Timberwolves in June 2022. He started off as Minnesota's senior vice president of basketball operations before he was promoted to general manager in 2024.
The 76ers finished with a 45-37 record during the 2025-26 season, defeating the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs before getting swept by the New York Knicks in the second round.
