Tobias Harris Reportedly Lands Spurs Contract, Leaves Pistons amid NBA Free Agency Rumors

Scott PolacekJul 1, 2026

Tobias Harris' latest tenure with the Detroit Pistons is over after two seasons.

The San Antonio Spurs and the forward agreed to terms on a two-year, $31 million contract on Wednesday, ESPN's Shams Charania reported.

According to Yahoo Sports' Kelly Iko, the deal is fully guaranteed and doesn't contain any options.

The Pistons previously signed Harris to a two-year deal ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. He helped lead them to the playoffs in each of those two seasons and the best record in the Eastern Conference in 2025-26 during quite the turnaround after they missed the postseason the previous five years.

While Detroit lost in the second round of the most recent playoffs to the Cleveland Cavaliers, general manager Trajan Langdon told reporters he hoped to bring Harris back on a new deal.

"His approach, his professionalism has been huge in terms of us establishing the environment we have in the past two years," Langdon said. "There's not a day he doesn't come to work. There's not a day he doesn't do extra work. … We're very proud of what he does for us, for this organization, for the city. … We hope that we can bring him back. He's somebody we want to keep in a Pistons uniform."

Alas, he will not be staying in a Pistons uniform following this move, which means they will need to turn elsewhere in their search for more secondary scoring for Cade Cunningham.

Harris was second on the team with 18.1 points per game during the 2026 playoff run, which was a notable uptick from his regular season when he averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists a night while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from deep.

That three-point shooting figures to be important moving forward when defenses collapse on Victor Wembanyama, and Harris can also provide veteran leadership with 1,033 regular-season games and 81 playoff games on a resume that includes previous stops with the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers in addition to his first time with the Pistons.

The forward is also versatile enough to defend multiple positions, which will allow San Antonio to mix and match its lineups depending on the opponent.

Still, it is fair to worry about Harris' ceiling at this stage of his career.

He will be 34 years old next season and has seen his scoring averages drop dramatically since he averaged 20.0 points per game in 2018-19 for the Clippers and 76ers. Harris also virtually disappeared during Games 6 and 7 of the Pistons' second-round loss to Cleveland when he scored a combined 11 points on 2-of-13 shooting from the field.

It was a difficult way to end his time with Detroit, but he will have a chance to bounce back on an individual level from the postseason loss and answer some of the lingering questions on this new deal as he continues to chase an NBA title.
