Arsenal Win Premier League After Manchester City Draw, Fans React to Title After 22-Year Drought
Bridesmaids no more.
After three straight seasons finishing second in the Premier League, Arsenal clinched the Premier League title on Tuesday thanks to Bournemouth's 1-1 draw against Manchester City.
It's Arsenal's first EPL title since the 2003-04 season and their 14th overall league title in top-flight English football.
It was quite the party on social media for Arsenal supporters:
Arsenal's journey to a Premier League title hasn't been easy. With five matches left in the season, the two clubs were even on points and goal differential. At that point, the Gunners—who had been top of the table for 209 days—had officially blown a nine-point lead they established back in February.
There were questions about manager Mikel Arteta's tactics (pragmatic if you supported them, overly cautious if you didn't care for his focus on game control and defensive structure); questions about whether the team had the mental fortitude to withstand a late-season push from City; questions about whether they would fail to secure a trophy for the second straight season after losing the League Cup in the final and bowing out of the FA Cup semifinals.
Supporters of other clubs around the Premier League have enjoyed deriding the Gunners as bottlers during the Arteta era. Would the 2025-26 season prove them right yet again?
But since Arsenal lost to City on April 19 by a 2-1 margin, the Gunners have won four straight matches. This time, it was City who faltered down the stretch, drawing two of their last four.
The ghosts of the 2022-23 season—when City went unbeaten in their final 15 Premier League matches and topped Arsenal by just two points for the title—have now been exorcised. Falling short to City the year prior and to Liverpool last season? Exorcised. Finishing second to upstart Leicester in the 2015-16 campaign?
Exorcised.
Arsenal are champions once more. And they may not be done, with a matchup against PSG in the Champions League final that could earn the Gunners their first-ever European title.
It would be a dream double. Arsenal is halfway there.
