SGA Reacts to Winning Back-to-Back NBA MVP Awards Ahead of Thunder vs. Spurs in WCF
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined an elite company on Sunday as the Oklahoma City Thunder star won his second consecutive MVP award.
On the NBA on Prime, he was asked how he'll remember this time in his life 10 to 15 years from now.
"Probably something like, 'Damn, I used to be nice. I don't have it no more,'" he said.
He also said that he and the Thunder still have something more to accomplish.
"Two feels pretty sweet, but we got a lot of work to do," he said.
Oklahoma City is becoming a city of MVPs, as they've now had four in the last 12 years in Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Gilgeous-Alexander. The star point guard believes the success is "no coincidence."
"It's been four MVPs in the last 12 years to go through this building, and I don't think that's a coincidence," he told reporters. "There's a reason why you have success when you come through this program and this facility and this city.
"Everything I just mentioned from the fans, the love they give, to the ownership, the front office, making things easy, making sure we put our work in. The coaches playing the right brand of basketball... The way things are run in this organization and this city, it breeds success. I'm just lucky to end up here."
Gilgeous-Alexander put up 31.1 points, 6.6 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game this year while shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from deep, enough to edge out Denver's Nikola Jokić and San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama.
Now having secured back-to-back MVPs, Gilgeous-Alexander is looking to be the first player to win back-to-back Finals MVPs since Kevin Durant did it in 2017 and 2018.
More individual hardware would be nice, but his ultimate goal is securing another title for Oklahoma City.
