Isaiah Thomas Reportedly Joining Celtics Staff, Former NBA Star's Role Revealed Ahead of Draft
Former NBA player Isaiah Thomas has reportedly been hired as a pro and college scout for the Boston Celtics, according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, a team he played for across parts of three seasons.
Per that report, "He will be based in the Seattle area, his hometown, giving president of basketball operations Brad Stevens reinforcements on the West Coast. The team's regional scouting staff includes former Hawks executive Derek Pierce, who is based in the Atlanta area, and Keandre Ashley, who is in Dallas. Benas Matkevicius leads the Celtics' international scouting operation."
Thomas is reportedly with team executives during this week's NBA Scouting Combine, learning the ropes.
The 37-year-old played for the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns, Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets during his 12-year career.
He was a two-time All-Star, both with the Celtics, and reached the postseason three times with Boston. His best NBA season was with the Celtics in the 2016-17 campaign, averaging 28.9 points and 5.9 assists per contest.
He remains a popular figure in the city:
"It means everything," Thomas told Noa Dalzell of CelticsBlog in July 2024 about seeing fans wear his jersey during the team's championship parade. "It's a blessing. I always talk to my friends about it—you would think I played 10 years here, you would think I won multiple championships. The love I have with the city, and vice versa, it's just genuine."
