B/R 99: Ranking the 99 Best Players at the 2026 World Cup
The 2026 World Cup is nearly upon us, and with an expanded field of 48 teams playing across a large swath of North America, it will be the biggest in history.
With that comes massive star power. Names like Kylian Mbappรฉ, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland are ready to show out during the 23rd iteration of the event, as all-time greats such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo still loom.
So of course we tried to impose the tiniest bit of order into all of this beautiful chaos.
To do so, B/R staffers held a vote to rank the best players at this year's World Cup, with particular emphasis on their current form heading into the event.
This isn't a career ranking. It's not a prediction of who will win the Golden Ball as the tournament's MVP. It's a ranking of the best of the best right now.
Top 99 Players by Nation and Domestic Club
1 of 100
Led by names like Mbappe and Yamal, France and Spain are the most stacked teams according to our panel, with England not far behind.
Meanwhile, we have a three-way tie on the club side. Arsenal originally had the edge with 11 players, but with Jurriรซn Timber's late injury announcement, the Gunners lost their slight lead.
99. Jonathan Tah, DEF, Germany
2 of 100.jpg)
Club: Bayern Munich
Caps: 47
Jonathan Tah had steadily earned a reputation as one of the most reliable Bundesliga center-backs in 10 years with Bayer Leverkusen, culminating in a famous title win in 2023-24.
With his work apparently complete in North Rhine-Westphalia, he made the switch to Bayern Munich on a free transfer ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, making 28 appearances for the Bavarians on the way to a second league title in three years.
He's been in and out of the Germany national team setup since his debut in 2016, either missing selection to squad through injury or being called up as an option for the bench. However, since 2023, he's been a central pillar of the Nationalelf's backline.
A tall, sturdy player who is colossal in the tackle and in the air, he has the presence and the experience to keep even the most fearsome international attackers at bay.

98. David Raya, GK, Spain
3 of 100
Caps: 12
Club: Arsenal
David Raya could very well be called the best goalkeeper in the world right now.ย
The Arsenal stopper has won the Premier League Golden Glove award three years in a row. He made a number of terrific stops as the Gunners won the title, most notably from West Ham's Mateus Fernandes when the pressure was on.ย
He's a brilliant last line of defence who may not make a single appearance at the World Cup. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente tends to prefer Unai Simรณn, so it remains to be seen whether Raya will play any meaningful minutes in what could be a harsh end to a sublime season for him.

High Vote: 20
97. Martรญn Zubimendi, MID, Spain
4 of 100
Caps: 25
Club: Arsenal
Rodri's return from injury will impact Martรญn Zubimendi's playing time once more.ย
His role of slotting in for the Ballon d'Or winner will likely continue, with Pedri and Fabiรกn Ruiz the choices for sitting ahead of the Manchester City midfielder, who is still trying to gain consistency after injury.
That Zubimendi can just slot in probably works against him. He replaced Rodri at halftime of the Euro 2024 victory against England. No noticeable drop-off occurred, and soon after, he was the subject of interest from the Premier League's best sides.ย
Now a champion with Arsenal, Zubimendi's nonchalance keeps the midfield on lock and will give Luis de la Fuente plenty of chances to keep Rodri fresh for the most important moments.
- Nick Akerman
High Vote: 40
96. Unai Simรณn, GK, Spain
5 of 100
Caps: 57
Club: Athletic Bilbao
Athletic Club's Unai Simรณn took over as Spain's first choice prior to UEFA Euro 2020, and he's held onto the role despite excellent performances at club level from David Raya for Arsenal and Joan Garcia for Barcelona.
It's one of the most competitive position battles in the entire tournament, yet Simรณn's international manager Luis de la Fuente believes it is impossible to look past the 28-year-old.ย
"People should not doubt a top goalkeeper like Unai Simรณn. His quality, his skills, his career, his professionalismโฆ I fully trust him," De la Fuente said in March.
Like his competitors for the starting spot, Simรณn blends excellent shot-stopping with top-tier distribution. The fact that he has helped the team to a European Championship title furthers his case above Garcia and Raya, though.

High Vote: 63
95. Iliman Ndiaye, FWD, Senegal
6 of 100
Caps: 39
Club: Everton
Iliman Ndiaye is one of a clutch of impressive attackers for Senegal, and he'll be hoping to feature more than he did at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he played just 135 minutes.
Since his move to Everton in 2024, he's been utilized more regularly for the Lions of Teranga, lining up in various attacking positions behind the central striker.ย
At the 2026 tournament, he will be aiming to add to his four international goals so far. After a Premier League campaign with the Toffees that brought six goals and three assistsโand the attention of Manchester United, according to Sky Sportsโhe'll be confident of swelling his tally.ย
Of course, big performances and a couple of crucial goals could heighten the clamor for his services, with clubs possibly lining up to pluck him from Merseyside to benefit from his trickery and direct play. Everton might find it difficult to keep him at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after the conclusion of the tournament.

High Vote: 47
94. Marcus Rashford, FWD, England
7 of 100
Caps: 70
Club: Barcelona
A resurgent Marcus Rashford may feel unlucky right now. He performed excellently on loan at Barcelona, contributing plenty of goals and assists across multiple competitions, sparking his career back into life after becoming stagnant at Manchester United.
While it looked like Barca would trigger his release clause, the huge expense on securing Anthony Gordon could now change things.
Rashford needs to stay focused and keep playing with the confidence he's oozed in recent times. When firing, the English forward's electric pace and finishing ability can create something from nothing.ย
It also appears Thomas Tuchel trusts himโa good sign for a player who needs full backing to perform his best.

High Vote: 32
93. Ryan Gravenberch, MID, Netherlands
8 of 100
Caps: 25
Club: Liverpool
When Ryan Gravenberch signed for Liverpool in 2023, he joined Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo as part of an extensive midfield rebuild. Few could have predicted how crucial he would become.ย
While showing flashes of his talent under Jรผrgen Klopp, the Dutchman came into his own under compatriot Arne Slot, taking up the No. 6 role and excelling as the Reds marched to the 2024-25 Premier League title.ย
Although the following campaign was hugely underwhelming for the Reds, the 24-year-old continued to impress, scoring five and assisting three more in domestic action while showing his now customary grace when progressing the ball up the field.ย
He is now a regular for the Netherlands under Ronald Koeman, often operating in a double pivot alongside Frenkie de Jong. Gravenberch might not be given as much license to push forward for the Netherlands as he does for Liverpool, but he'll still be needed to make crucial interceptions in the middle of the park and to link the defensive and attacking units.ย

High Vote: 48
92. Casemiro, MID, Brazil
9 of 100
Caps: 85
Club: Manchester United
Casemiro heads into the World Cup on the back of his best season in Manchester United colours. Two years after his career was given the death knell by Jamie Carragher, the legendary midfielder put up a brilliant goalscoring campaign to say goodbye to an adoring Old Trafford crowd.
Now a free agent, Casemiro likely has the MLS in his sights.ย
This is the perfect audition moment for a midfielder whose resilience and return to form deserve major plaudits. He looks leaner, is playing with the quality that made him so successful at Real Madrid, and has the confidence to anchor a side that needs his leadership.
- Nick Akerman
High Vote: 31
91. Nico Paz, MID, Argentina
10 of 100
Caps: 8
Club: Como 1907
Nico Paz's potential had always been clear in Real Madrid's famed Castilla academy, but he's steadily growing into a quality senior talent with Como.
His 12 goals and seven assists in Serie A in the 2025-26 campaign helped the Lombardy side to climb to fourth in the Italian top flight. Those efforts might yet result in a return to Los Blancos, who could activate the low buy-back clause in his contract.
For now, though, the 21-year-old's focus will be on his first World Cup with Argentina, helping the nation in its quest for back-to-back titles.
He's relatively inexperienced on the international stage, having just eight caps for La Albiceleste. However, he already has a goal and an assist under Lionel Scaloni, and he'll be a useful option off the bench, offering pace, playmaking and pinpoint shooting from long range.ย
The tournament could truly be the springboard to greater things, and even if Real Madrid come calling, he might be better suited sticking around with Como to develop further.ย
- Leo Collis
High Vote: 39
90. Reece James, DEF, England
11 of 100
Caps: 22
Club: Chelsea
Not too long ago, there were questions whether Reece James would actually ever make it to a World Cup. Consistent hamstring issues have seen him miss 97 games in his professional career, and he was forced out of England's last two major tournaments because of fitness concerns.
It would be understandable if managers elected to focus more on players with a better track record of availability, but James has been too impressive this season to ignore. Chelsea have had to be careful to manage his fitness, but he has arguably been the club's most consistent player in a turbulent season.
Able to play both right-back and in midfield, James' versatility makes him a valuable player on its own, but his quality in both defence and attack put him on an entirely different level among his peers.

89. Marc Cucurella, DEF, Spain
12 of 100
Caps: 23
Club: Chelsea
An uncertain future at Chelsea may spur Marc Cucurella to find his best form once more.ย
Spain's starting left-back is an experienced member of a squad that is expected to push for the title, his tactical nous important when making the pitch bigger or squeezing the centre for Luis de la Fuente's side.
One of Cucurella's unsung traits is his ability to snuff out danger by holding onto the ball. Spain is full of attackers who will try stuff. It's players like Cucurella, who have the pace and ability to read the game ahead, who will allow such creativity to happen without leaving the team exposed.

High Vote: 53
88. Micky van de Ven, DEF, Netherlands
13 of 100
Caps: 19
Club: Tottenham
Arguably the fastest player on this list, Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Micky van de Ven should have no trouble standing out at the World Cup.
Likely to feature at left-back for the Netherlands with Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk in the middle, Van de Ven's rampaging style could be even more prominent. He put his athleticism on full display in the UEFA Champions League against FC Copenhagen this season, carrying the ball from the edge of his own penalty area to score a sensational solo goal at the other end.
It was one of few highlights in a troubled season for Spurs, but Van de Ven took over the captain's armband as the club dragged itself out of relegation trouble. Free from the worries of relegation, he could show just how good he is.

High Vote: 54
87. Sadio Manรฉ, FWD, Senegal
14 of 100
Caps: 125
Club: Al-Nassr
While far from the player who was so devastating for Liverpool, Sadio Manรฉ is still a crucial part of the Senegal setup.ย
The 34-year-old scored twice and provided two assists on the way to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. While the Lions of Teranga won on the day against Morocco, they were later stripped of the title for exiting the pitch in protest at a refereeing decision.ย
He is Senegal's all-time top scorer, with 54 goals and counting, and he'll be raring to go after missing the 2022 World Cup because of injury. In a tough group with France, Norway and Iraq, the nation will be hoping he can extend that record.ย
Now playing in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr, with whom he just won a league title, he scored 10 and added six assists in the successful domestic campaign.ย
While expecting him to perform to the heights he hit in the Premier League is a stretch, he can still be a difference-maker at the World Cup, and his veteran experience on the sport's biggest stages will be so important for the team.

86. Jules Koundรฉ, DEF, France
15 of 100
Caps: 46
Club: Barcelona
As this list indicates, France's defence is looking mighty fine ahead of the World Cup.ย
Jules Koundรฉ will slot in at right-back, assuming his recent muscle injury doesn't come back, to complete an extremely powerful defensive line. He's quite a unique full-back these days, his size and power making him a more physical challenge to overcome than many others.ย
Koundรฉ's education as a centre-back also allows Didier Deschamps plenty of tactical switches if needed. His coolness on the ball is also welcome alongside William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano, who should feel settled by having his distribution just a short pass away.

High Vote: 36
85. Willian Pacho, DEF, Ecuador
16 of 100
Caps: 34
Club: Paris St-Germain
After joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2024-25 from Frankfurt, it's safe to say Willian Pacho has elevated his standing among the world's best defenders.
The Ecuadorian started every single game and played practically every minute of PSG's back-to-back UEFA Champions League-winning campaigns. He's even been regularly rested for Ligue 1 games, demonstrating just how important he is to PSG's European dominance.ย
At just 24 years old, Pacho could become one of the game's centre-back standard-bearers for the next decade, with opponents fearing that he could still get even better.
For his national team, he has featured 34 times, completing 90 minutes in every game he has played. Those efforts helped La Tri to a surprising second-place finish in CONMEBOL qualifying, finishing the campaign with just five conceded in 18 games.
Pacho has the durability, consistency and battling qualities to make Ecuador a team that will be tough to break down in North America.ย

84. Jordan Pickford, GK, England
17 of 100
Caps: 82
Club: Everton
Jordan Pickford is the man for the big occasion. Arguably the last place you want to have a showman is in goal, and yet Pickford always carries it off for his country.
His penalty save against Jorginho in the final of Euro 2020 would be one of his country's most iconic sporting moments had England gone on to win. The Italian had developed a knack for making goalkeepers look foolish with an unconventional run-up, yet Pickford was seen mouthing "no problem" to himself before saving a penalty that would've seen England defeated.
Pickford is rarely short of a celebration after a big save, and he gives the impression that he relishes being the man literally in the line of fire. That attitude has seen him play a major role in England's runs to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final since 2018.

83. Kenan Yฤฑldฤฑz, FWD, Tรผrkiye
18 of 100
Caps: 28
Club: Juventus
Tรผrkiye head into the World Cup with a couple of young stars who rank amongst the best in the tournament. Arda Gรผler may be the country's biggest star, but Kenan Yildiz's versatility and bravery should gain plenty of attention.
The Juventus winger is capable of playing from the left, in midfield or up front if needed. He's brilliant on the counter and will allow Vincenzo Montella's team to spring forward after sitting deep.ย
Yildiz looks to isolate the defender and put the challenge to them with a relentlessness that will test the best full-backs, especially in such hot conditions. He won't miss a step tracking back, either, putting in a shift whenever his coach calls on him.

82. Marcus Thuram, FWD, France
19 of 100
Caps: 33
Club: Inter Milan
From France's perspective, Marcus Thuram peaked at exactly the right time in Internazionale's Serie A title-winning campaign in 2025-26.ย
The 28-year-old had six goals in his final six games of the season, in addition to three assists. While he'll have a hard time forcing himself into a France starting XI with plenty of attacking stars, he has at least shown he can be an effective option off the bench.ย
He has only scored three in 34 games for Les Bleus, but if Didier Deschamps can harness his clear abilities in a cameo role, the squad has a fine emergency ripcord if they are struggling to get through stubborn back lines.
At 6'4", he's also a notable aerial threat, which will come in handy if there are few signs of being able to play through defenses.
He managed two assists in Qatar, including one in the final that brought France temporarily level at 2-2. He has proved he has composure in high-pressure situations, and that could be utilized again.

81. Bradley Barcola, FWD, France
20 of 100
Caps: 18

Bradley Barcola has been the odd man out in Paris Saint-Germain's collection of attacking stars. While there is no shame in failing to displace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembรฉlรฉ and Dรฉsirรฉ Douรฉ, Barcola's rotational role in his club's run to consecutive European titles could be overlooked.
However, the concept of substitutes being thought more of as "finishers" rather than mere replacements is gaining tractionโArsenal manager Mikel Arteta is among the more notable names to speak on the topicโand Barcola could be a devastating finisher for France.
Data analyst Spencer Mossman has highlighted the winger's unique ability to stretch the field. Entering the game against tired legs, also suffering under the heat of a summer tournament, Barcola could be a key figure in his team's success even with limited playing time.

21 of 100.jpg)
Caps: 16
Club: Arsenal
Eberechi Eze might still be reeling from a Champions League final defeat that saw him miss a penalty in the shootout, but that shouldn't detract from a great season.
The 27-year-old came into the campaign after a memorable FA Cup final win with Crystal Palace, adding the Community Shield as the curtain raised on 2025-26. Then, after a move to Arsenal, he won a Premier League title, scoring seven and providing two assists on the way to glory.ย
He's also been impressive for England, albeit in a limited role. Eze has three goals in his last seven appearances under Thomas Tuchel, with all coming from the bench.
While he might not be favored as a starting option at the tournament, the German will see his effectiveness as a substitute, which should be crucial with games coming thick and fast.ย
Eze's positional versatility will be so valuable, too, providing an option on the wing, in the No. 10 role or in central midfield.ย

79. Omar Marmoush, FWD, Egypt
22 of 100.jpg)
Caps: 49
Club: Manchester City
After a disappointing club season for Manchester City that saw him make just eight Premier League starts and score three goals, Omar Marmoush's place on this list shows just how high his stock soared previously.
After scoring 27 goals across 46 Bundesliga appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt, Marmoush was once viewed among the most exciting forwards in Europe. He joined Man City in January 2025 for $86 million and scored seven league goals in the back half of his debut season.ย
He entered this year looking primed to be a key player for Pep Guardiola, but he found himself on the outside looking in when the Spaniard settled on his favored lineup. Marmoush is still an incredible talent, however, with the ability to threaten defenses with his pace, precise movement and long-range shooting.ย

78. Brahim Dรญaz, FWD, Morocco
23 of 100
Caps: 25
Club: Real Madrid
It's been three years since Brahim Dรญaz switched international allegiance from Spain to Morocco. In that time, he's become the main creative force for the African nation, and also the player with the most dramatic penalty moment in recent history.
Brahim's missed Panenka in the Africa Cup of Nations final loss to Senegal initially looked like it would be an all-time blooper. However, Senegal's disciplinary issues during the match (stepping off the pitch in protest after the penalty was awarded) led to the Confederation of African Football overturning the result.
Diaz's blushes were sparedโฆsort of. While many still acknowledge Senegal as the true winners, the history books now say Morocco. Before that moment, Dรญaz showed the brilliance that has kept him at Real Madrid, scoring five goals before trying that audacious dink from the spot.

77. Denzel Dumfries, DEF, Netherlands
24 of 100
Caps: 71
Club: Inter Milan
Denzel Dumfries has never been the flashiest player, but his standing in the game continues to rise even with him now 30 years old.ย
After seemingly spending a career being linked with some of the world's biggest clubs, The Athletic's Mario Cortegana, Guillermo Rai and David Ornstein have reported Dumfries is likely to join Real Madrid from Inter Milan this summer.ย
It's understandable how new manager Josรฉ Mourinho could be taken in by a 6'2" full-back who has 35 goal contributions in five league campaigns for Inter, predominantly as a wing-back.
For the Netherlands, Dumfries will play on the right of a back four. He played almost every minute of his country's run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals, and he will be expected to feature prominently again at the World Cup.

76. Romelu Lukaku, FWD, Belgium
25 of 100
Caps: 125
Club: Napoli
In a senior club career spanning almost two decades and eight clubs, Romelu Lukaku has scored 316 goals in 681 games. Despite that seemingly elite record, he's never quite hit world-class status and has never truly found a club to call home.ย
With Belgium, he has 90 goals in 126 games, sitting comfortably at the top of the nation's scoring chart. That should suggest he'll be crucial for the Red Devils in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
However, he has struggled for fitness this season, with muscle injuries limiting him to just seven appearances in all competitions for Napoli. Belgium boss Rudi Garcia even described the 33-year-old as "out of shape" heading into World Cup training camp.ย
But his potential was evident off the bench in a friendly against Croatia on June 2, scoring an emphatic, game-clinching goal with time running out.ย
Lukaku might not be the player of a decade ago, but he still knows how to find the net. If Belgium can get him even close to match fit, he should still prove a notable threat at the World Cup, a tournament in which he has scored five goals in 12 appearances.

75. Kai Havertz, FWD, Germany
26 of 100
Caps: 57

Kai Havertz seems to be hitting form and fitness at the right time.ย
His smart run and thumping finish in the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain reminded everyone that he's a big-game player who steps forward to make himself known when his teams need him. His finish against the United States also nodded towards one of his greatest strengths: finding a position and delivering a significant blow.
Havertz works effectively in tight spaces, using his football intelligence to free himself up in the box and drop deep to collect the ball when needed. He's vital to Germany's chances, so maintaining fitness that has been so finicky could define the nation's tournament.

74. Hakan รalhanoฤlu, MID, Tรผrkiye
27 of 100
Caps: 105
Club: Inter Milan
Hakan รalhanoฤlu will be making his first and likely final appearance at a World Cup for Tรผrkiye, with the 32-year-old poised to rack up more game time as he bids to be the country's all-time record appearance maker.
According to Transfermarkt, he's just 15 matches away from that honor, and while he won't claim the outright record in North America, he will take a hefty bite out of Rรผลtรผ Reรงber's high watermark of 120.
รalhanoฤlu's game has never relied on pace or dynamism, so despite his advancing years, he should still be effective at the tournament. In a deeper role, he can effectively play quarterback, dictating the play and spraying the ball around the pitch.
His dead-ball prowess could help Tรผrkiye to some unlikely points in Group D, where they will face Paraguay, Australia and the United States. That lineup could be flattering enough to give the Crescent-Stars a chance at making the knockouts.ย
For Internazionale in 2025-26, he grabbed nine goals and four assists on the way to the Serie A title, and it could have been more if he hadn't been laid low with injury for much of the campaign.
A national team icon, he will be keen to finally make his mark on the world stage.

You're unlikely to find a more tenacious and hard-working forward than Matheus Cunha at the 2026 World Cup.ย
He endeared himself to Manchester United fans with 10 goals in 29 matches during his debut season at Old Trafford, including a banger against Arsenal. He's a one-man dribbling machine at times, with a standout knack for alleviating danger by getting on the ball and beating multiple opponents.
Cunha's international career has been stop-start since his debut in 2021. He hasn't scored too many for Brazil, and he only started two qualifying matches heading into the tournament. This could be the moment he proves his worth.

After signing Guรฉhi, though, City went unbeaten in the Premier League with him in the lineup.

Arguably the most divisive player on the list, Cristian Romero is either too reckless to ever be considered among the best at his position or an elite defender whose aggressiveness underpins everything that makes him such a nightmare to play against.ย
Romero has received significant criticism during a rocky season at club level. As captain of Tottenham Hotspur, he missed six games through suspension after receiving 11 yellow cards and two red cards in the Premier League as the club struggled in a relegation battle.
At international level, though, Romero has won three straight major tournaments while being a key figure at the heart of Argentina's defense. His performances for his country have seen teammate Lionel Messi describe Romero as the best defender in the world.
While the truth on Romero probably lies somewhere in between these two extremes, the fact is that he is a proven winner on the game's biggest stage.

70. Morgan Rogers, MID, England
31 of 100
Caps: 13
Club: Aston Villa
Despite the presence of a certain Jude Bellingham in the England squad, Morgan Rogers has a very good chance of featuring in the XI for the opening game against Croatia.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has never really warmed to the Real Madrid star, and injuries have also prevented the German from striking up a rapport with the 22-year-old. That has seen Rogers feature in the No. 10 role in eight of the coach's 13 games in charge, with Bellingham getting the nod just four times.
Rogers is far from a teacher's pet, though. He has fully earned his increasing reputation in the game, racking up 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 games for Aston Villa, winning the Europa League in the process.
He scored one and made one in the final against Freiburg, proving to Tuchel that he can handle pressure games with aplomb.
With clubs already lurking in an effort to seal his signature, Rogers could add a couple of million to his price tag with a strong World Cup campaign.ย

The Bayern Munich defender has formed a solid partnership with William Saliba for France and will continue to keep Ibrahima Konate, another defender who has had his doubters, out of the starting lineup.
Upamecano is blessed with sheer size and physical dominance. The edge of rashness that limited his game has dulled in recent times and he seems more assured of himself as a player who deserves to play at the highest level.ย
Formidable on his day, Upamecano stepping up could make Les Bleus an even more daunting prospect than they already are.

After playing a huge role in Liverpool's 2024-25 Premier League title triumph, Alexis Mac Allister didn't maintain those heights in the following campaign.
A downturn in form can be put down to managerial tactics rather than the player, though, and the 27-year-old should be able to show his true quality on the world stage.ย ย
Mac Allister is a regular in Lionel Scaloni's Argentina setup, performing in a variety of positions as the coach tries to include as much talent as possible in the starting XI.ย
His battling qualities, ability to cover plenty of ground and surprising aerial threat despite being just 5'9" will all be valued during the tournament. He's also not afraid to unleash from distance, which will help to bypass low blocks set to be employed by teams looking to quell the threat of Lautaro Martinez and Lionel Messi.ย
Mac Allister played in all but one game of La Albiceleste's world-conquering 2022 team in Qatar, and that experience will be vital in helping first-timers like Nico Paz adapt to the pressure.ย

Elliot Anderson may just be the man to unlock some important qualities in Thomas Tuchel's England squad.ย
He's turned into an unbelievable central midfielder in the last 18 months, finishing the Premier League season with the outrageous stat of winning the ball 96 more times than any other player. He's an eloquent passer and a strong runner, meaning England could potentially have three powerhouses in the middle if Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham make up the central three.
Anderson's ability to shoulder so much defensive responsibility should set others up to attack. It's going to be interesting to see how much work he can get through in the heat. It's a testament to the former Newcastle man that he doesn't look fazed by suddenly becoming important at work. If he keeps doing what he's been doing, he'll have an excellent tournament.

Dani Olmo may have to settle for impacting games off the bench in this World Cup as part of a stacked Spain midfield, but he undoubtedly possesses the ability to do so.ย

He's a complete player and has previously shown his worth on the international stage.
As part of Spain's title-winning Euro 2024 squad, Olmo scored in three consecutive knockout-round games as part of his team's run to the final. While he didn't score in the championship game, Olmo still came up with a last-minute goal-line clearance to deny England an equalizer.ย

In an impressive career that has seen him play in four of Europe's five top leagues, Antonio Rudiger has earned a reputation as a tough-tackling, defensive pest over the years.
The 33-year-old is now at Real Madrid, where he found himself on the bench more often than not in the 2025-26 season. However, he boasts experience and leadership in spades, and he'll be an important member of Germany's dressing room even if he doesn't play every game, as he did at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.ย
While he wasn't a part of the 2014 Germany squad that claimed a World Cup title, he has lifted a La Liga trophy and earned two Champions League winners' medals at the club level. Antoine Semenyo may be the fastest-rising player on this list. By this time next year, it's not inconceivable that he could be the Premier League's undisputed top wide forward, and that's if he's not already there.ย
The Ghanaian scored 17 league goals last season, good for the third-highest mark overall and seven more than the next-closest winger. Ten goals in 20 appearances for Bournemouth saw him become a fixture in transfer speculation before a move to Manchester City in January.ย
The $83 million deal was just one of a number of milestones in Semenyo's steady progression from playing in England's sixth tier at 18 years old all the way through to becoming a Premier League regular and then bona fide superstar. The only question remaining for the 26-year-old is how far he can go from here.

Cody Gakpo was often singled out during Liverpool's disastrous Premier League title defense, proving ponderous and ineffective at both left wing and at the point of attack.ย
However, he's almost a completely different player for the Netherlands, especially at international tournaments.ย
At the 2022 World Cup, he scored in three consecutive group games to help his nation to the knockout rounds. At Euro 2024, he scored three and assisted once in six games as the Oranje reached the semi-finals, finishing as the joint top scorer.ย
Overall, he has 21 goals in 50 games for the Netherlands, with Ronald Koeman apparently knowing exactly how to utilize him effectively.ย
At his best, Gakpo is a direct, powerful winger who can cut inside and unleash accurate shots from long range. The nation will be hoping it's that player who turns up in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.ย

It's a mark of his quality that even through the pain, it took Davies signing a new Bayern contract in February to end the reported interest of Real Madrid. He has the potential to be truly elite if he can put together a decent run of matches.ย

The hype machine has been whirring for Christian Pulisic since well before he was able to vote.ย
As an American soccer player making waves in Europe with Borussia Dortmund, who signed him as a 16-year-old, he was naturally placed on a pedestal as the boy who would one day lead the USMNT to become a superpower in the game.
While things haven't quite turned out that way, Pulisic can do little about outsized expectations, and he is still a dangerous player in his own right. After joining AC Milan in 2023, Pulisic was instrumental in the team's second-place Serie A finish, recording 20 goal involvements. He repeated the number the following season despite his club struggling to eighth place in the league.
Even while typically playing out of position as a central forward for Milan this season, he has chipped in with eight league goals and four assists. Pulisic will be back in his favored left-wing spot for the USMNT, and he could end up being one of the stories of the tournament if the hosts make a deep run.

Mikel Oyarzabal enters the World Cup with a chance to score his second major tournament-winning goal for his country. The forward achieved the playground dream in the Euro 2024 final against England with just four minutes remaining, exchanging passes with Marc Cucurella before making a perfectly timed run to the near post and turning the ball home.
After largely being a backup to Alvaro Morata in that tournament, Oyarzabal is now his country's unquestioned No. 9. He was joint-top on the team for both goals (six) and assists (three) in qualifying and registered more than one goal involvement per 90 minutes played.
His reputation probably still lags a little way behind his performances to this point, but that's likely a reflection of an unselfish play style and the fact that he has remained loyal to Real Sociedad at club level.ย

It was a season to forget for Alexander Isak, whose transfer from Newcastle United to Liverpool couldn't have gone much worse.ย
The 26-year-old featured in just 14 of a possible 38 Premier League games for the Reds, seeing pitch time for just 702 minutes, according to Transfermarkt. After a slow integration into the team, he broke his leg against Tottenham Hotspur while scoring his third goal for his new club.ย
However, he should be fit and ready for an unlikely World Cup campaign with Sweden, who will feature at the tournament despite finishing bottom of qualifying Group B with two points.ย
He proved his fitness in a warm-up game against Norway in early June, coming off the bench and scoring the consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat.
That will boost his confidence going into his first-ever World Cup, where he will be relied upon to help his nation qualify from a tough group stage featuring Tunisia, Japan and the Netherlands.ย
It's obvious he has quality, scoring 62 goals in 109 games for Newcastle before his annus horribilis. He also has 17 goals in 58 games for Sweden, proving he can make things happen at international level.

It's taken a long time for Fabiรกn Ruiz to truly get his flowers. Despite seven years of consistent performances across spells with Real Betis, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain, he vaulted into the public consciousness by turning Euro 2024 into his personal playground.
In a deep dive into "the quiet maestro's" performances, Opta Analyst wrote, "During Euro 2024, he has averaged 4.6 progressive passes per 90, by far the highest rate of any of Spain's midfielders and behind only Aymeric Laporte (5.8โa centre-back who operates in a lot more space) and Lamine Yamal (6.0โa freak)."
Ruiz started six of Spain's seven games and was named in the team of the tournament. His passing was a standout of his performances, but he also just looked a level above so many of his opponents technically.ย

The man with the best smile in football has talent to burn, but that doesn't mean he always gets a starting berth for club or country.
In the 2025-26 campaign, Rafael Leรฃo was in Milan's initial XI just 23 times out of the 29 Serie A games he was available for. In his international career for Portugal, he's started just 24 of his 44 appearancesโand in his last start against Chile, he was sent off at halftime.ย
At club level, that can be partially chalked up to a handful of injuries and to being eased back into action following a layoff, but it is also down to a nonchalance that has rubbed managers up the wrong way, putting him on the bench for fixtures in which hard work is more important than skill.ย
In the national team's case, he's got a crowded field in attacking areas that he hasn't quite broken into, with veterans typically favored over the 26-year-old.ย
Still, it's a luxury for the Seleรงao to call upon a player with 80 goals and 65 assists for Milan over the past seven seasons.ย

Rรบben Dias' arrival at Manchester City as a 23-year-old in 2020 heralded one of the most dominant eras in the club's history. Dias' impact on that success may be more intangible than outsiders will ever truly knowโhis leadership qualities have frequently been spoken about by his manager and teammates. That City's failure to win a Premier League title in the last two seasons feels like a borderline crisis speaks to the standards that Dias has played a part in setting.
Internationally, Dias has played a supporting role to Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of leadership, but he could be a natural successor when Ronaldo brings his international career to a close. He feels equally capable of blasting one into the top corner from miles out, or getting two-footed while he stands on the ball and salutes. That's the type of spirit that makes the World Cup so much fun.
Cherki's international career is just getting started. He's fearless and willing to stand up, meaning he should see plenty of the ball when he's on the pitch for France. His constant movement and ticking over of possession, not to mention top-level creativity, could turn him into one of the stars of the tournament.

Jeremy Doku's mesmerizing skills and blistering pace on the wing have never been questioned. His end product, on the other hand, has often left something to be desired.ย
While five Premier League goals for Manchester City last season doesn't sound like a lot, it was his most for the club in the top flight in three years at the Etihad Stadium, and four of them came down the stretch while the Citizens were still in the hunt for the title.ย
Of course, that means he heads into the World Cup in excellent form, which will be music to the ears of Belgium manager Rudi Garcia.ย
The 24-year-old was in the squad that went to Qatar in 2022, but he only made the field for 18 minutes as the Red Devils crashed out in the group stage. This time around, he'll be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

67 of 100

Cristiano Ronaldo's last World Cup threatens to undermine Portugal's push for the title. His place in the Euro 2024 squad created an unnecessary distraction. He looked slow and lacked lethality, often undoing the side's hard work by fluffing chancesโfinishing the tournament with zero goals after 28 attempts.
Leaving CR7 at home would be a bold choice, though. He's still a producer of big moments. He's also captain in every sense of the word, with the type of personality that will see him stand up and dictate even if he's on the bench.
His place at the tournament is also solidified by Roberto Martรญnez not really having a replacement he can fully rely on. Portugal's squad is crammed with wingers; only Gonรงalo Ramos, a bit-part player for Paris Saint-Germain, feels a natural replacement for Ronaldo.
Whatever happens, we can expect tears, whether CR7 delivers the trophy that is missing from his historic haul or if he sees his final chance dissolve in tatters.

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarรฃes does it all. It's rare to find midfielders now who are capable of influencing games in every phase, but Guimarรฃes is a scorer, creator and workhorse all in one.
The 28-year-old was top among deeper-lying Premier League midfielders in combined goals and assists last season with 14. The nine league goals he scored also formed the highest single-season total of his career, while Guimarรฃes also finished joint-sixth among midfielders in possession wins in the other team's final third.ย
Simply put: He played an important role in generating dangerous situations for Newcastle and was clinical after doing so. Next to Casemiro in Brazil's midfield, Guimarรฃes will be expected to lean more heavily on his attacking qualities and create chances for those ahead of him.

So much talk of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's last World Cup, but what about Kevin De Bruyne? The best attacking midfielder of the last decade is flying under the radar as a man who is on the brink of saying goodbye.
De Bruyne is also the most iconic reminder of Belgium's Golden Generation who is still standing. Despite injuries forcing him out of over 30 matches for Napoli this season, he's still an individual who makes a hell of a difference when fit enough to play.ย
Six goals in as many starts for Belgium en route to qualification is a keen reminder that De Bruyne's decisiveness isn't fading, even if his legs are.

In his final season at Manchester City, Bernardo Silva reminded everyone exactly what the Citizens will miss in the coming campaigns.
The 31-year-old was a model of consistency, delivering top-level performances week in, week out. His close control, understanding of space, and unyielding tenacity were all on display regularly, although perhaps that's not so unusual for one of the best to have ever worn a blue jersey.ย
Silva will be a starter at his third straight World Cup, and coach Roberto Martinez has plenty of options for where to play him. With a lot of world-class players to be shoehorned into the XI, that comfort in multiple roles will help to avoid imbalances in the side.ย
Behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Silva will be the second-most experienced player in the Portugal squad, and while he will likely cede the armband to the 41-year-old, he will still play a captain's role on the pitch.ย

Still a phenomenal presence in his own box, Thibaut Courtois enters the World Cup with a huge part to play in a transitioning Belgium squad.ย

International audiences are used to seeing Vincent Kompany, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen ahead of him, all legends in their own right and a reminder of how expectations have started to drop for the team.ย
With that in mind, Courtois may well face more shots on goal than he's used to at major tournaments. Senne Lammens is also gaining momentum, although it's unlikely he'll displace one of the best goalkeepers of the generation quite yet.

Mohamed Salah has endured a nightmare season. He's seen his league goal total drop from 29 to seven, gone to war with his manager and taken a significant amount of criticism for his performances.
But there are caveats, the main one being that his Liverpool team is no longer built to maximise his strengths. That won't be a problem with Egypt, for whom Salah is still the main manโthey will still be expecting to see the 29-goal winger who was comfortably Liverpool's best player en route to a Premier League title.ย

Virgil van Dijk has been the best centre-back in the world over the last few years. He isn't the best centre-back now, but the Netherlands captain's performances will be pivotal to his country going far in the tournament. Just with Liverpool, if VVD doesn't perform, the team-wide drop-off is usually noticeable.
The Dutch squad is not a classic one. Ronald Koeman doesn't have too much proven strength in depth, or an elite goalscorer in the Marco van Basten or Robin van Persie ilk. He does have a lot of streaky players to call on, such as Cody Gakpo, Tijani Reijnders and Memphis Depay.ย
Van Dijk will need to be the constant in this setup. His size still ensures he's a difficult challenge to overcome in the air, but Koeman would do well to let him take a step back and not get caught out on the break. In doing so, he may reignite the juggernaut that can dictate on and off the ball from the back.

Dรฉsirรฉ Douรฉ's rise has been meteoric. After Paris Saint-Germain plucked him from Stade Rennais in 2024-25 as a rising talent, he has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young players in world football.
His footwork is impeccable, no matter what position he's playing in. He can effortlessly glide down the wing, hugging the touchline and cutting inside at the perfect moment. Or, he can play in a No. 10 role, exploiting gaps, driving at centre-backs, and generally getting opposition legs all tangled up.
In two seasons in the French capital, he has 29 goals and 27 assists in all competitions, and it looks like he can only get better.
Douรฉ only has six caps for France, making his debut in early 2025. Les Bleus have a glut of attacking talent, which makes it tough to muscle into the starting XI. However, despite a lack of international experience, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Douรฉ get the nod, and manager Didier Deschamps can rotate his forward options to keep everyone fresh for yet another run to the final.ย

Away from the newspaper headlines, Enzo is the perfect example of what a modern central midfielder should be. Assured on the ball, creative and ferocious in the tackle, the 25-year-old will never go down without a fight and must be a nightmare to play against.

Gabriel may land in America just in time to head his Champions League final penalty back to Budapest. Does that seem a harsh thing to say? That's the kind of bad joke he's going to need to get used to hearing.
Despite his recent misfortune, it shouldn't be forgotten that the Brazil centre-back is a colossus. There's a hint of crazy about his playing style that will sometimes see him make a mistake, but often allow him to dominate the opposition. Whether it's aerially or with the ball on the floor, Gabriel is the kind of defender who will throw his whole body in the way just to get a nick on the ball.

For Germany, Wirtz has often produced his best, though. At Euro 2024, his first major tournament for his country, a 20-year-old Wirtz dazzled early on in the 5-1 demolition of Scotland in the competition's opening game. In the quarter-finals, he popped up with a last-gasp equaliser to take Spain to extra time, where the eventual champions claimed victory.

When Liverpool sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich in the 2025-26 summer transfer window, it looked like the Bundesliga side had picked up an exciting, threatening winger who could cause plenty of headaches but who didn't have enough end product.
For the Bavarians, the Colombian has added potency to his game. He scored 26 goals and provided 23 assists in 51 games in all competitions. His previous best return for Liverpool was 17 goals and eight assists in 50 games in 2024-25.
That input helped Bayern to yet another league title and a Champions League semifinal, making the reported $88 million investment look like a steal.ย

Achraf Hakimi is the type of player you'd see on the teamsheet and wonder how to stop him, a super-aggressive attacking outlet from right-back that will sprint into open space the moment it opens up. He's excellent at delivering the ball just out of the defender's reach, curling a pass into the danger area ready for his striker to tap in.

He was a starter when the festivities began and a substitute for Juliรกn รlvarez by the time Argentina held the trophy aloft, but that doesn't quite tell the right story. Lionel Scaloni used both to maintain the hustle up front, utilising the fresh legs to ensure Argentina didn't drop off in key moments.ย
Lautaro came off the bench to score the winning penalty against the Netherlands in the semi-final win. He's a man who doesn't need long to do a lot, as seen by his five goals in 222 minutes' worth of play at the Copa America. With Rodri out for nearly the entirety of the 2024-25 season, Manchester City slipped to a rare trophyless campaign.
After he returned to the pitch for 2025-26, City won both the League Cup and the FA Cup, and they pushed Arsenal hard for the Premier League title. That's not entirely a coincidence.
When he's fit and in form, Rodri is unquestionably the best defensive midfielder in the world. He relishes the dirty work in the engine room, with his anticipation and perfect timing in the tackle quelling attacks before they even begin. He's so strong that players practically wilt if he comes within touching distance.
During his Ballon d'Or-winning season, he also had a tendency to pop up with crucial goals and assists. While that hasn't been so forthcoming since, because of injury or otherwise, he definitely has that in his locker.ย

Jamal Musiala's return to form has been a slow process after he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer. That he appears so high in the voting is a reflection of his performances prior to that devastating injury.
A significant aspect to the hype around Musiala was his early start at the top of the game, which saw him become a key part of Bayern Munich's squad while still 18 years old. The following season, the attacker registered 22 combined goals and assists in Bayern's Bundesliga title victory.
Musiala's progress has arguably stalled, but he rose so far so quickly that raising his performance levels would be a significant challenge. Despite an injury history longer than Peter Crouch's bed, Bukayo Saka always seems to come back at the top of his game.ย
While those absences are frustrating, his ability to make an impact almost immediately upon his return to the pitch at least makes the regular issues easier to stomach. He missed seven games as Arsenal clinched the Premier League title, but he still managed to score seven goals and provide seven more.
It can be easy to forget that he's still just 24 years old. He's already featured prominently at three international tournaments for the Three Lions, including two European finals.
Of course, injuries have prevented him from featuring more under Thomas Tuchel, but the German simply can't leave Saka out of the XI if he's available.

He's only lined up under Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti six times, making an impact on the scoresheet just once. But a frontline without him seems almost unfathomable, especially with the Seleรงao Canarinho not boasting as much world-class attacking talent compared to previous squads.

A spat with former manager Xabi Alonso likely played a significant role in a domestic scoring drought that lasted from early October to the start of February. The Spaniard was given his marching orders on January 12, and Vinicius' form picked up not long after.
For Carlo Ancelotti, though, he'll just be focused on the five goals Vinicius scored in his final six games of the league season, giving the Italian confidence that a player he knows so well is feeling sharp ahead of his second appearance on the world stage.ย

It was considerable pressure for a 20-year-old, and Dembรฉlรฉ never really hit the consistency required at a club of Barcelona's size over six years at the club. Dembรฉlรฉ even struggled somewhat in his first year with Paris Saint-Germain, but his second year saw him placed at the center of Luis Enrique's attack.ย
He's gone on to score 45 goals in all competitions as the team has swept aside opposition at home and in Europe, flourishing with the freedom afforded to him by his coach. It will be interesting to see how Dembรฉlรฉ fares in a more rigid French team, but Les Bleus' star power in attack is enough to put them among the favorites.

3. Harry Kane, FWD, England
98 of 100
Caps: 112
Club: Bayern Munich
Harry Kane is the front-runner for the Ballon d'Or, according to oddsmakers, and he could cement that status with a fine showing in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
He claimed his third straight Bundesliga Golden Boot in 2025-26 while guiding Bayern Munich to yet another title, showing no signs of slowing down even as he approaches his 33rd year.ย
He's England's all-time top scorer in international football, and in his last 11 games for the Three Lions, he has 11 goals.ย
As England captain, he has additional responsibilities other than finding the back of the net, but it's the latter that is really his most important job. While he's an undisputed regular in the starting XI, his supporting cast has chopped and changed under Thomas Tuchel, so Kane continuing a consistent scoring run is vital to any hopes England have of returning to the final for the first time since 1966โthe nation's only World Cup title victory.
He can score from all angles and distances, and he can get his name on the scoresheet even when it looks like the chance has slipped out of reach. Meanwhile, he's always on point from the penalty spot, which is so important for a nation that has typically faltered from 12 yards. He's also elite in the hold-up game, keeping possession with his strength and wisdom before bringing rapid wingers and midfield runners into the action.
Kane is a complete forward, with few remaining of his ilk left in the game.

2. Lamine Yamal, FWD, Spain
99 of 100
Caps: 25
Club: Barcelona
The possibility of a World Cup without football's greatest young talent has loomed too closely in recent weeks. However, it seems Lamine Yamal will be ready for Spain's attempt to win the big one. His participation should be celebrated by anyone who loves football.
What is there left to say about Yamal at this point? At 18 years old, he's already played a key part in Spain winning Euro 2024. He scored 16 goals and provided 11 assists in Barcelona's La Liga-winning campaign. He is arguably the most difficult-to-plan-for dribbler in the world right now, only really matched by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who is seven years his senior.ย
Then there's that left foot. The curl on his crosses, the ferocity on his shots. It's mind-blowing to think Yamal has a real shot at being the best player at this tournament so early in his career. Just watch and enjoy, whatever your affiliation.

1. Kylian Mbappรฉ, FWD, France
100 of 100
Caps: 96
Club: Real Madrid
Kylian Mbappรฉ has felt built for major tournament football ever since scoring four goals in his World Cup debut in 2018 as a 19-year-old. The young Mbappรฉ's speed on its own made him electrifying, but he also had the composure to match as part of France's championship team.
He scored eight times at his next World Cupโa single-tournament total that can only be beaten by five other playersโas France again made the final before losing out to Argentina.ย
Mbappรฉ's performances make it surprising that he has never won a Ballon d'Or or Golden Ball as the World Cup's best player, but he has an excellent chance to secure more individual and collective glory at the tip of the spear that is this France team. He also needs just four goals at the tournament to become the joint-top scorer in World Cup history.
The 27-year-old has endured a difficult season at club level with Real Madrid, although many players would wish that their difficult seasons still see them finish as their league's top goalscorer. But Mbappรฉ has shown the expectations placed on him are not unrealistic, and he could once again silence his critics on the World Cup stage.
