Victor Wembanyama, Spurs Reportedly Agree to New $252M Contract, Updated NBA Salary Cap

In one of the least surprising moves of the NBA offseason, the San Antonio Spurs agreed to a long-term extension with Victor Wembanyama after he led them to the 2026 NBA Finals.

The Spurs agreed to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension with Wembanyama on Friday, per ESPN's Shams Charania. The deal includes a player option in the fifth season.

According to Charania, Wembanyama agreed to the 25 percent maximum instead of the 30 percent supermax.

The news comes after NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Wembanyama was considering signing for less than the $252 million max he could get on a new deal.

In February, ESPN's Bobby Marks provided a framework for what this contract would look like when he reported "there will be little negotiating." Marks projected a five-year, $252 million maximum extension that could be worth up to $303.3 million because of All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year and MVP language.

Wembanyama was scheduled for restricted free agency after the 2026-27 campaign on his previous deal.

There was never a doubt San Antonio would do whatever is necessary to avoid that scenario.

After all, it made him the face of the franchise when it selected him with the coveted No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NBA draft. And he wasted no time announcing himself as one of the future faces of the league as the Rookie of the Year and an All-Defensive First-Team selection who led the NBA with 3.6 blocks per game in his first season.

He made his first career All-Star Game in his second season even though injuries limited him to 46 games and then completed his ascension into the conversation for the best player in the league at just 22 years old in his third season.

Wembanyama was brilliant in 2025-26 and won the Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-Star Game again while averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.1 blocks and 1.0 steals per game.

He also shot 51.2 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from deep as the league's ultimate matchup nightmare.

At this point, Wembanyama feels like a lock to win at least five more Defensive Player of the Year awards after leading the league in blocks per game in each of his first three seasons.

But it was the team success that stood out the most this past season, as he made the playoffs for the first time in his career and led the Spurs to the NBA Finals. While they lost to the New York Knicks with the championship on the line, they still impressed by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.

San Antonio is set up for long-term success better than perhaps every team in the league with a roster that is loaded with young talent and franchise cornerstones in Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, among others.

The Spurs figure to be championship contenders for years to come with such a formidable core in place, and they made sure the centerpiece of that group isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
