Josh Giddey Injury Update Provided by Bulls After Ankle Surgery, Latest Timeline for 2026 NBA Season
The Chicago Bulls announced Wednesday that guard Josh Giddey recently underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle.
The team added that Giddey is expected to resume basketball activities in about three months and be ready for the start of training camp.
Giddey recently completed his second season with the Bulls and his first since they signed him to a four-year, $100 million contract extension in September.
The 23-year-old Aussie to 54 games this season due to various injuries, including ankle and hamstring ailments.
However, Giddey put up career-best numbers when he played, averaging 17.0 points, 9.1 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 1.9 three-pointers made per game, while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Originally selected sixth overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2021 NBA draft, Giddey spent his first three seasons in OKC before getting traded to Chicago for Alex Caruso in 2024.
In his first season with the Bulls, Giddey played in 70 games and averaged 14.6 points per game, plus career-high marks at the time of 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.5 three-pointers made and 1.2 steals.
Giddey also helped the Bulls finish 39-43, but they fell short of the playoffs by losing in the postseason play-in tournament.
Chicago took a step backward this season with a 31-51 mark, primarily due to the fact that it traded away several key players, including Coby White, Nikola Vučević and Ayo Dosunmu.
With the trades of White and Dosunmu, and veteran guards Anferee Simons and Collin Sexton set to hit free agency this offseason, the Bulls have limited backcourt depth.
Aside from Giddey, the only true guards under contract for the Bulls next season are Tre Jones, Rob Dillingham and Isaac Okoro.
Of course, the Bulls could and likely will make additions via free agency, trades and the draft, but as of now, Giddey is likely in line for the heaviest workload and best production of his career in 2026-27.
It remains to be seen if that will lead to a winning product for the Bulls, but if Giddey is healthy, he should deliver another career year.
