'Ted Lasso' Star Cristo Fernandez Lands Professional Soccer Contract with USL Championship Club
From the television screen to the soccer pitch.
On Tuesday, USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive announced that it is signing actor Cristo Fernandez, who is best known for starring as fictional footballer Dani Rojas in the hit Apple TV series Ted Lasso.
"Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart, Fernandez said, per ESPN's Cesar Hernandez. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC -- the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates -- for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."
Prior to his acting career, Fernandez played at the youth level with Mexican side Tecos FC, but he ended his career early after suffering an injury at age 15. He had a two-month trial with El Paso before officially signing with the club on Tuesday.
"Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat," Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez said. "His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club."
Fernandez, who is a forward like his Ted Lasso character, is joining an El Paso club that is in fourth place in the Western Conference this season with four wins, two draws and three losses.
