Latest LeBron Rumors on Timeline for Decision on Lakers Contract, Free Agency, NBA Retirement
NBA fans shouldn't expect a quick resolution when it comes to the status of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James for the 2026-27 season.
The Athletic's Dan Woike reported a final decision isn't believed to be "imminent."
"League sources continue to say James is sincerely unsure about whether he wants to continue playing," per Woike. "A return to the Lakers is a possibility, though he's sure to have other suitors in free agency, especially if he takes a sizable pay cut from the $52.6 million he made this season."

LeBron, Lakers Open to Return

Bronny Questioned About Bron's Future
The Oklahoma City Thunder sent the Lakers packing on Monday night, completing their second-round sweep with a 115-110 win.
Understandably, James was noncommittal about what's next when addressing his future.
"I think you guys asked me about [retirement], and I've answered questions," he told reporters. " I don't think I've come out and been like, 'Oh, retirement is coming.' With my future, I don't know, honestly. It's, obviously it's still fresh from, obviously losing [the series]. And I don't know. I don't know what the future holds for me."
A lot of fans will think they've heard this story before. In recent years, James was similarly unsure in the immediate aftermath of the season ending, only to decide he'd keep playing.
But this moment right now is probably as close as the 41-year-old has been to retirement. At the very least, he'll be feeling conflicted.
James is clearly good enough to keep playing. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists during the regular season. In the first round against the Houston Rockets, he turned back the clock a bit and looked like the force of nature capable of putting his team on his back when it mattered.
But the 22-time All-Star is entering free agency without a ton of clarity about his options.
The Lakers are centering their future around Dončić, so they may not be willing to accommodate James like they have in the past. He could leave Southern California for another contender, but the franchises that will have championship aspirations lack financial flexibility.
Although he has something left in the tank and will have the opportunity to extend his legendary career, LeBron could conclude it's time to finally walk away.
