Bronny James Questioned About Dad LeBron's Decision on NBA Retirement, Free Agency After Lakers Loss

Adam WellsMay 12, 2026

Even though Bronny James is closer to LeBron James than anyone else in the NBA, he doesn't have any insights into what the future holds for his father after the Los Angeles Lakers' season ended on Monday night.

Speaking to reporters following the Lakers' 115-110 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder (starts at 1:00 mark), Bronny said "I have no clue" when asked where LeBron's head is at right now as he prepares to hit free agency or consider retirement.

"He looks like he can play another however many years, but he's been in league for longer than he's been out of league. It's insane," Bronny added. "I think he should think about it, and whatever he feels happy with, do that."

If LeBron does have an idea of what he wants to do, he isn't saying anything right now. His response when asked about it after the loss was to say he needs to sit with his family and "recalibrate" before making any decisions.

LeBron can become a free agent this summer after a little bit of drama last offseason when he opted in to his $52.6 million salary for 2025-26.

This was an interesting season for LeBron and the Lakers as they learned to play with Luka Dončić as their primary ball-handler. Austin Reaves eventually stepped into the role as their No. 2 option, leaving LeBron as the No. 3 for the first time in his career.

Their results during that period worked, as the Lakers went 15-2 in March to solidify their spot as the No. 4 seed in the West. They eliminated the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs before running into the buzzsaw that is Oklahoma City in the Western Conference semifinals.

LeBron will have roughly two months before free agency begins to decide if he wants to remain with the Lakers. He could also choose to end his legendary career after 23 seasons.

Right now, though, it doesn't seem like anyone has a strong idea of what LeBron is thinking. Even members of his own family, based on Bronny's comments.
