Julia StumbaughMay 6, 2026

The race to be named the NBA's top defensive player in The Athletic's most recent player pool was not a close one.

Out of 151 players polled, 60 players (41.1 percent) named the San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama as the league's best defender, per The Athletic's Josh Robbins, Sam Amick and Joe Vardon.

The Los Angeles Clippers' Kris Dunn and Kawhi Leonard tied for second with seven votes (4.6 percent) each, per Robbins, Amick and Vardon.

Wembanyama, who recently made playoff history with 12 blocks as the Spurs lost Game 1 of the second round to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, led the league with 3.1 blocks per game during the regular season.

"You'll drive in, and you've kind of got a layup, and you see him, and you turn and go the other way," a player who voted for Wembanyama told Robbins, Amick and Vardon.

Players were also asked to vote for the most and least impressive coaches other than their own, per Robbins, Amick and Vardon.

The Celtics' Joe Mazzulla topped the voting for the most impressive coach, while the Wizards' Brian Keefe topped the least impressive poll with 22 out of 100 votes, per Robbins, Amick and Vardon.

One player told Robbins, Amick and Vardon he voted for Keefe because the Miami Heat's Bam Adebayo was playing the Wizards when he recorded his historic 83-point game in March.

"They should all be out of the league for that," the player told Robbins, Amick and Vardon.

Other votes were more split. The Atlanta Hawks' Jalen Johnson and Boston Celtics' Derrick White led voting for the NBA's most underrated player with six out of 151 votes each.

The Houston Rockets' Alperen Şengün led the most overrated player poll with 10 out of 81 votes, with the Minnesota Timberwolves' Rudy Gobert and Washington Wizards' Trae Young receiving seven votes each, per Robbins, Amick and Vardon.

Gobert's landing on the overrated poll comes after he helped hold Wembanyama to just 11 points on Monday in the Timberwolves' Game 1 win.

Gobert will now look to prove he doesn't belong on the overrated list while Wembanyama defends his player-granted title as top defender when the Wolves and Spurs tip off Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals Wednesday night at 9:30 p.m. ET.
