New Dusty May Rumors Link Michigan HC to NBA Job After NCAA Title, Contract Extension
Michigan men's basketball head coach Dusty May has been connected to the Orlando Magic's head coaching job, per longtime NBA insider Marc Stein in his latest newsletter.
"League sources say that the Magic are admirers of Michigan's Dusty May and would have a level of interest if he were indeed available. It must be noted that the expectation at this point in the college game is that May will stay with the Wolverines after they beat UConn for the national championship. Does May, however, indeed have NBA aspirations?"
Orlando was just eliminated from the playoffs after falling in seven games to the Detroit Pistons. Head coach Jamahl Mosley, to be clear, still has his job. However, Stein reported that Mosley is on the hot seat.

"The reality is that Mosley has been subjected to hot seat chatter for many months. The anticipation in NBA coaching circles is that he will be the first one blamed for Orlando's shortcomings," Stein wrote.
May is one of college basketball's best coaches. He took Florida Atlantic to the Final Four as a No. 9 seed in 2023. Three years later, May guided Michigan to the national championship after a 37-win season. He is 190-82 overall.
May, of course, has a great gig at Michigan and could very well be with the Wolverines for quite some time.
He just agreed to a new deal with Michigan in April that will keep him in Ann Arbor for "many years to come," per Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel. However, May told Alex Schiffer of Front Office Sports he won't sign the deal until July. May did say, though, that signing the deal would be a "formality."
Brice Marich of 247Sports noted that May has said on numerous occasions he is headed back to Michigan.
As for the Magic, it's unclear what their next moves will be. They've lost in the first round three straight years. This season, obviously, featured Orlando coming very close to making the second round in a near-fantastic upset effort, but now the Magic have to figure out the next steps.
It's unclear whether that will involve a change on the sidelines. Mosley took over a team that went 21-51 before his arrival and helped the Magic become winners and consistent playoff participants. The team has also hit a first-round roadblock, so now the Magic have some decisions to make as they hope to finally break through for a deeper playoff run.
