Granted, it would be quite the curious twist if the Wizards traded for Davis, only to trade him months later before so much as ever playing a game for them.
The Wizards made the surprising move to trade for Davis in February alongside Jaden Hardy, D'Angelo Russell and Dante Exum, sending the Dallas Mavericks Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, two first-rounders and three seconds in return.
It came after they made the equally surprising decision to trade for Trae Young in January. Given that the Wizards have been in a full-blown rebuilding effort for a few years now, adding two veteran stars seemed a bit at odds with the timeline of the younger core.
Young, at least, actually played for the Wizards last season, albeit just five games. But Davis, dealing with various injuries, never suited up for the Wizards and played all of 20 games in total during the 2025-26 campaign.
Publicly, Davis has seemed committed to the Wizards, and he is under contract through next season (with a $62.7 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign that any sane human being would be hard-pressed to decline).
"When the trade happened and I got here, I've said this place is not what people make it seem," Davis told reporters earlier in April. "It's a testament to the organization, the coaching staff, the players, everybody here. I want to be able to have fun where I am. I want to be able to compete where I am. I want to be able to learn wherever I am—and this organization has that."
What the organization probably doesn't have is the short-term chance to compete for a title. The one-two punch of Davis and Young has the chance to be good, no doubt, but the supporting cast is young. A playoff appearance isn't out of the question if Davis and Young can stay healthy and jell, but if Davis' goal is winning another title, his best shot is elsewhere.
Perhaps a team like the Golden State Warriors, trying to maximize what's remaining of Stephen Curry's career, could call up the Wizards. The Miami Heat are always star-hunting, though Bam Adebayo and Davis might not be the cleanest fit. The Los Angeles Clippers could use another star to pair with Kawhi Leonard.
There are potential suitors out there, surely. Convincing the Wizards to trade him before he's taken a single shot for them is another matter entirely, however.
