Doc Rivers Gives Cryptic Response to Rumors About Bucks Future in Video

Andrew PetersApr 7, 2026

Doc Rivers may have just revealed his future career plans.

The Milwaukee Bucks head coach was asked Tuesday how much longer he wants to coach in the NBA, to which he more or less answered that he's planning to retire soon.

"I have seven grandkids now, and they're all eight years and under," Rivers told reporters. "And it kills me every time I miss grandparents' day with each one of them in school. It's probably time to go see them more, so I'll let you figure out the rest."

Rivers' time with the Bucks could be coming to an end soon, whether it's on his terms or the franchise's. NBA insider Marc Stein reported earlier this week that the two sides "could be heading for some sort of parting or job restructuring" after Milwaukee missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade this year.

Stein added that former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins is already being eyed as Rivers' replacement.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday that Bucks governors Jimmy Haslam and Wes Edens are expected to make a decision on Rivers "in the next week."

Rivers' tenure with the Bucks has been rough, as he's made the playoffs twice but suffered first-round exits each time. Milwaukee will finish the 2025-26 campaign with fewer than 40 wins for the first time since 2015-16.

Rivers can't shoulder all of the blame, though. The Bucks have been rattled by injury since he took over, with Giannis Antetokounmpo missing the playoffs in 2024 and Damian Lillard suffering a torn Achilles in the first round last year.

Antetokounmpo has also missed most of the season this year, playing just 36 games.

If Rivers decides that the 2025-26 campaign will be his last, he will still be remembered as a legendary coach who won a title with the Boston Celtics in 2008. He was also voted into the 2026 Hall of Fame class last week.

Rivers has been an NBA head coach since 1999, so he has earned the time off that could be waiting for him if he calls it a career.
