Examining Cavaliers' Salary Cap, Decisions for 2026 NBA Free Agency after Knicks Loss

Kristopher KnoxMay 25, 2026

The Cleveland Cavaliers made it to the playoffs and avoided the play-in tournament for the fourth straight year in 2026. While Cleveland wasn't quite as dominant as it was during the previous season, it still entered the playoffs as one of the East's top contenders—and with a new star in tow.

Before the trade deadline, the Cavs made a blockbuster move to acquire James Harden, sending out Darius Garland as part of the package. The 36-year-old quickly meshed with Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, and the rest of the roster to form a quality playoff squad.

The Cavs managed to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals, though they proved to be no match for the New York Knicks.

Now that Cleveland's postseason has ended, it's time for coach Kenny Atkinson and general manager Mike Gansey to start preparing for 2026 and the pivotal offseason that will precede it.

Here, we'll examine the Cavaliers' salary cap outlook, top impending contract decisions, and potential targets for 2026 free agency.

The Cavaliers will have a few tricky contract situations to address, but they won't be facing a complete rebuild this summer. 11 players are set to be under contract or carry options, including Mitchell, Mobley, and Allen.

However, adding significant pieces to the proverbial puzzle will be virtually impossible under the current outlook. Cleveland is set to be $13.2 million over the first luxury-tax apron and just over the second apron. Presumably, they'll find one way or another to get and stay below the second apron.

As a reminder, teams over the second apron cannot aggregate contracts to trade for a single player, send out cash in trades, use trade exceptions from previous years, or take back more salary than they give in a trade.

If the Cavaliers aren't under the second apron, they'll be limited to minimum contracts and heavily restricted on the trade market. Cleveland is scheduled to have a late-first round draft pick—likely the San Antonio Spurs' selection after pick swaps are exercised—which could at least land another developmental player.

Top Contract Decisions

James Harden

The biggest decisions Cleveland is likely to face this offseason will involve Harden. His contract includes a $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season, and he's largely expected to decline it. Only $13.3 million of that option will be guaranteed if he does exercise it.

Assuming Harden opts out and wishes to remain in Cleveland, the Cavs will have to work out a new deal and fit it into their cap plans—a longer but smaller contract might get Cleveland below the second apron.

The Cavaliers will have a club option with Craig Porter Jr., while Dean Wade, Larry Nance Jr., Thomas Bryand, and Keon Ellis are slated to be unrestricted free agents.

Cleveland may also need to sort out Mitchell's future this offseason. He'll be extension-eligible this summer and holds a player option for the 2027-28 season. ESPN's Brian Windhorst told ESPN Cleveland shortly after the Harden deal (h/t Tony Pesta of SBNation) that the Cavs are "worried" that Mitchell won't re-sign this summer.

While Harden's situation may have the most immediate impact in 2026, Mitchell's could determine how the next few years look in Cleveland.

Free Agents to Pursue

LeBron James

Assuming Harden does return to Cleveland and the Cavs don't do something drastic—like trading Mitchell and blowing up the roster—free-agent options will be limited.

As Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley recently noted, Cleveland's "realistic" and even "optimistic" options involve bringing back players like Ellis and Wade. Gansey will have more flexibility if Harden doesn't return, but it certainly feels like he was added with the expectation of a new deal.

According to Ashish Mathur of Cavaliers Nation, at least one source believes Harden could sign a two-year, $75 million deal that includes a player option for 2027-28.

The potential wild card here is former Cavaliers star LeBron James. The 41-year-old is in the final year of his deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. Some believe he could return to Cleveland on a minimum deal for a farewell tour and one last shot at bringing a championship to northeast Ohio.

In January, ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that "multiple team and league sources" believe that the Cavs would "gladly welcome James back" if he wished to return for a third stint this summer.
