Memphis HC Charles Huff Drops Epic Quote Citing Lil Baby to Explain Why Music is Banned at Practice

Zach BacharMar 28, 2026

Memphis football head coach Charles Huff name-dropped rapper Lil Baby while explaining why he doesn't let his players listen to music at practice.

"When the Navy SEALs get ready to go do a mission, they not listening to Lil Baby," Huff told reporters Friday. "When they training to go to war, which we're training to go to war, they ain't listening to NBA YoungBoy. Coach Saban trained us like that. We should be focused on what it takes to execute the next play. Not who's on the aux, who's pressing play. I've never seen the military get ready to go on a crucial war mission with NBA YoungBoy playing in their heads or in the background."

Huff is entering his first full season with the Tigers after they hired him as their next head coach in Dec. 2025.

He replaced Ryan Silverfield, who left Memphis to become Arkansas' new head coach.

Huff previously patrolled the sidelines for South Mississippi in 2025, helping the school finish with a 7-5 record. It marked an impressive turnaround for the Golden Eagles, as they posted a 1-11 record in the year prior to his arrival.

Huff also spent four seasons as head coach of Marshall from 2021-24.

The Thundering Herd played in three bowl games during his tenure leading the team, opting out of a fourth bowl appearance in 2024 due to player exits. Marshall compiled a 32-20 record under Huff.

Prior to his head coaching career, he served as an associate head coach and running backs coach at Alabama under the legendary Nick Saban in 2019 and 2020.

The Crimson Tide won a national championship in Huff's final season with the school.

He's now taking over a Memphis squad that's looking to remain a contender in the AAC after finishing with a winning record in each of the past four years. The Tigers posted an 8-5 finish in 2025, making an appearance in the Gasparilla Bowl.

As Memphis prepares for its 2026 campaign, music won't be included during any practices.
