Naomi Osaka Hints at Possible Tennis Retirement After Miami Open Loss in Round of 64

Adam WellsMar 27, 2026

Naomi Osaka might be getting close to hanging up her tennis racket for good.

Speaking to reporters after her recent loss at the Miami Open, Osaka hinted at retiring by saying she's "not going to stay on tour if" she continues to lose in the first round because it's not worth being unable to compete at the highest level to sacrifice time away from her family.

"I'm not going to stay on tour if I'm losing in the first round... I'd rather just be a great mom and be there for my daughter," Osaka said. "I want to win titles and I want to be the best player I can, but if I have to sacrifice having a lot of time with my daughter, I'd rather not do it."

While considering her future, Osaka did make clear that she hopes to participate in the upcoming clay-court stretch that begins in Madrid on April 21 and leads into the French Open starting on May 18.

"I hope I can play Madrid, Rome and then obviously the French Open," Osaka said.

Osaka had a first-round bye at the Miami Open, so her opening match was in the second round against unseeded Talia Gibson. Osaka lost in straight sets, marking the third time in three tournaments so far this year that she hasn't made it past the fourth round.

One of her losses was a walkover in the third round of the Australian Open when she withdrew from the tournament during her match with Madison Inglis due to an abdominal injury.

Osaka, who is currently No. 15 in the WTA rankings, has no tournament wins since the 2021 Australian Open. She has seven career singles titles, including two each at the Australian Open and U.S. Open.
