The 2026 US Open gets underway on Sunday, and you know what that means: It's time to get some 'fits off.

Whether you're in the stands or on the court, the US Open has become synonymous with bold fashion choices. Style has become an essential component of the US Open experience, and seeing the players express themselves through their kits is one of the many highlights of the next few weeks.

While the popularity of US Open fashion seems to grow every year, it's not new. Tennis stars have been breaking boundaries and pushing the limits with their attire at the event since its inception in 1895. As we look forward to all of the bold outfits to come, let's look back at the 10 best US Open outfits of all time.

10. Francis Tiafoe, 2023 US Open

Famous for his penchant for bold color schemes, Francis Tiafoe's 2023 US Open getup is a standout among the hundreds of hues he's worn.

The deal backdrop works for him. The pink, tan, and maroon print is an unexpected combination, but heck, that works too.

The psychedelic vibes, combined with the texture's functionality, make it all feel oddly practical, but maybe that's just Tiafoe's confidence doing the talking.

9. Venus and Serena Williams, 1999 US Open

At the 1999 US Open, Venus and Serena Williams famously wore feed-in braids with beads as they took the court. Venus wore all-white beads, while Serena matched with white beads and a distinct two-strand pink accent in the back.

They often wore their hair in braids early in their careers as a nod to their roots and a celebration and acknowledgment of their culture. It was awesome to see two young stars come onto the scene and absolutely dominate a sport long notorious for its lack of diversity. From the beginning, Venus and Serena were authentic, unapologetic forces shaping every facet of the game.

8. Naomi Osaka, 2025 US Open Labubu

Was all of this completely absurd? Of course. Did it all somehow still work?

Yes, of course. It's Naomi Osaka!

Osaka has never been afraid to take fashion risks, and it's put her on the tennis fashion radar for good. At the 2025 US Open, she donned a red Nike jacket over a matching Nike tennis dress with a bubble skirt. She had sparkly roses in her hair, and yes, she had a matching, crystal-embellished Labubu as an accessory.

Much like Agassi and his mullet in 1988 and Serena Williams and her denim skirt in 2004, the US Open is a great reflection of fashion trends of the time. Perhaps unfortunately, Labubus were huge in 2024 and 2025. It was cool to see Osaka put her own twist on a trend.

7. Maria Sharapova, 2006 US Open

Maira Sharapova's 2006 US Open dress remains one of the most iconic looks in tennis fashion history.

The dress itself was iconic enough on its own, inspired by Audrey Hepburn and adorned with Swarovski crystals. But Sharapova also became the first player to debut different day- and night-session match kits, switching into the dress for her night-session.

Sharapova was just 19 when she donned the dress, and it's become part of tennis lore, as she captured the 2006 US Open wearing it.

Classy, revolutionary, and sparkly, this dress was the perfect foray into nighttime fashion at the Open.

6. Coco Gauff, 2023 US Open

Coco Gauff was a few years ahead of her time at the 2023 US Open. Burgundy and chartreuse have become one of the trendiest color combinations of 2026, especially in sneaker culture and activewear.

She debuted her extremely popular burgundy shoe with New Balance this year, and yes, this was the year she won the US Open.

Sometimes, a simple fit with a slightly unusual but aesthetically pleasing colorway really gets the job done.

5. Serena Williams 2018 US Open

Williams was never one to shy away from a tutu, and this lilac dress from the 2018 US Open is our favorite among all of her tutu looks.

The mock tennis dress was a departure from her penchant for streetwear, and showed she can pull off just about any vibe. It may look like this dress had one shoulder, but the right shoulder blended in seamlessly with her skin by design, which is a fun feature.

The look was a highly anticipated collaboration between Nike and Off-White, and it lived up to the hype.

You may recall this fit came right after the controversy in which Williams wore a thereafter banned catsuit at the French Open. It was a statement: Williams was not going to stop getting creative with her outfits.

4. Naomi Osaka, 2024 US Open

A cheeky nod to Brat Summer, Osaka's bright green ensemble at the 2024 US Open is one of many inventive looks from the star that have already elevated her to one of the best-dressed players of all time.

The look featured bows throughout, including on the back of her sneakers. There was also a removable green and white tulle tutu, and an accompanying white windbreaker with -- you guessed it -- a bow.

Osaka told the New York Times that she, Nike, and designer Yoon Ahn drew inspiration from Japanese fashion, especially for the bows.

"I remember one of the first times I went to Japan, I saw so many frills and so many bows," Osaka said. "I wouldn't automatically associate myself with being girlish when I'm on the court, but I tend to gravitate toward really beautiful and cute things. I think there's something quite cool in making that an emphasis."

Osaka has become the modern name to watch in tennis fashion for a reason.

3. Roger Federer's "Darth Federer" Outfit, 2007 US Open

When your outfit has a nickname that's been around for decades, that's either a really good or a really bad thing.

In Darth Federer's case, it's epic. Federer famously wore all black at the 2007 US Open, and the stadium DJ played along by playing the Darth Vader Imperial March from Star Wars as he walked onto the court.

It was a big departure from Federer's typical lighter color palette, and it happened at the perfect time in the midst of one of his most memorable runs. At the end of the season, Federer became the only player in history to win three majors in a year for three years (2004, 2006, 2007).

2. Serena Williams Denim Outfit US Open

Williams has so many looks to pick from, especially when you consider her domination while wearing these kits instantly makes them 10 times "tuffer," as the kids say.

Her 2004 Nike-designed denim look, featuring leather boots that deserve a spot in the tennis hall of fame, is the boldest in a sea of bold fashion choices for the legend.

This was a great blend of streetwear and functionality, especially considering 2004 was a peak year for streetwear in general.

Williams has referred to this look as her favorite she's ever donned, and in a Hot Ones interview, she said it was a nod to Andre Agassi's denim moment in the 1988 US Open (spoiler alert: We may see that one soon!)

Tournament officials deemed the boots "too over the top" for gameplay, but Williams gets brownie points for at least attempting to push that boundary.

1. Andre Agassi, 1988 US Open Jorts

There were tennis icons making fashion statements before Andre Agassi ever took the court, of course. The early-to-mid 1900s saw barriers broken aplenty, like Suzanne Lenglen's calf-length, uncorseted dresses in the '20s and Gussie Moran's laced-trim knickers, which debuted in 1949.

Still, it's fair to say that Agassi is the father of the evolution of on-court fashion. He did the most to revolutionize tennis style, opting for streetwear reflective of the '80s and '90s as opposed to the traditional, all-white country club attire. 

His usage of denim and spandex established new textures worn on the court that are still popular today. The 1988 US Open featured arguably his most iconic fit, or kit if you want to call it that: The Jorts.

Agassi was one of – if not – the first players to ever appear on the US Open court in denim shorts. The tiny, acid wash jorts were designed by Nike, and accompanied by a very late 80s mullet.

Look, we're not looking at this fit and calling acid wash jorts and a mullet the pinnacle of high fashion. This look is iconic because it represented rebellion, creativity, and the beginning of more street-wear influenced tennis style.
