Kylian Mbappe Denies Rumors Real Madrid Staff Misdiagnosed Injury After Testing Wrong Knee

Zach BacharMar 25, 2026

Real Madrid Kylian Mbappé' is setting the record straight regarding his recent knee injury.

"The information that [Madrid] examined the wrong knee is not true," Mbappé said told reporters Wednesday, via Alex Kirkland of ESPN. "Perhaps I bear some indirect responsibility for the situation, because when you don't communicate about what you have and what is going on, it leaves the door open to interpretation, and everyone is rushing to fill in the blanks."

Guillermo Rai and Mario Cortegana of The Athletic were among those to report that Real Madrid's medical staff performed an MRI on Mbappé's wrong leg in Dec. 2025. The 27-year-old was experiencing issues with his left knee, although the scan was performed on his right leg.

Mbappé appeared in three matches for Madrid before a later scan showed a partial posterior knee ligament tear, per Rai and Cortegana.

The superstar didn't travel with Real Madrid for the Supercopa de Espana semifinal in Saudi Arabia before joining the team for the final against Barcelona on Jan. 11, via Rai and Cortegana.

Mbappé first suffered the injury following a blow to his knee during Real Madrid's 2-0 loss to Celta Vigo on Dec. 7.

He's continued to navigate through left knee issues as of late, coming off the bench in each of Madrid's last two matches.

Mbappé provided an update regarding his health on Monday.

"My knee is fine," Mbappé said, via ESPN. "It's getting better. It's going quite well, and I know there's been a lot of speculation about it and some false things have been said."

It's an encouraging sign that his knee injury seems to be improving, especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.
