Warriors' Steph Curry Reacts to Possibly Joining Hornets After Father Dell's Jersey Retirement

Adam WellsMar 21, 2026

Stephen Curry isn't necessarily looking to leave the Golden State Warriors, but he did at least tease possibly joining the Charlotte Hornets after his father Dell's jersey was retired by the franchise.

Speaking to DaShawn Brown of WSOC-TV in Charlotte, Curry was asked about his comments to Dell about making an exception to bring the No. 30 Hornets jersey out of retirement if he were to join the club at some point.

"Always keep your options open haha. Like you said, I know what that means when you get your jersey retired, it's immortalized, nobody should be able to touch it, but I'm sure he would be able to make a special exception if that were the case," Curry said.

The Hornets officially retired Dell's jersey on Thursday at a halftime ceremony during their game against the Orlando Magic.

Dell played 10 of his 16 NBA seasons in Charlotte. Stephen grew up in the city and went to college at Davidson, which is located within 25 miles of Charlotte.

Even though Stephen has said throughout his NBA career that his goal is to only play for the Warriors, he has left the door open for the Hornets as the other franchise he would consider if he were to leave Golden State.

"Everybody asks me, 'You wanna play one year for the Hornets and come back?' … I am not breaking any news right now, I'm not making any promises," Curry said in September 2022 while receiving a key to the city of Charlotte. "All I would say is if there was a team that I did want to play for that was not named the Warriors, that would be it."

Despite the odds being against Curry suiting up for the same team that his father once did, there is at least a chance it could happen. The four-time NBA champ is only under contract with the Warriors for one more season, after all.

Who knows what might happen between now and the summer of 2027. The Hornets have a promising young core led by LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel they are build around.
