J.J. Watt Responds to Trending Video of Texas Tech's Weight Room, 'Would Be Wildly Absurd'

Andrew PetersMar 14, 2026

J.J. Watt isn't a fan of how Texas Tech's football program goes about its training.

The NFL legend responded to a viral video that showed off Texas Tech's weight room, which doesn't allow dumbbells smaller than 40 pounds.

"Hopefully just performative for social media and not actually true," Watt wrote. "Would be wildly absurd and irresponsible. Also, jumping straight to 40 pounds would literally be a shortcut. So 'no shortcuts' doesn't really applyโ€ฆ"

Watt makes a good point that things could get dangerous if players are jumping straight to 40 pounds, especially for position groups that don't have as much size as others.

The move from Texas Tech could also just be performative, like Watt suggested.

The Red Raiders weightlifting program must be pretty effective, though, as Texas Tech went 12-1 and won the Big 12 championship on the way to its first College Football Playoff appearance last season.
