Jason Witten's Son Cooper Commits to Oklahoma Over Georgia, Full Scouting Report on 5-Star

Timothy RappMar 3, 2026

The Oklahoma Sooners have received a commitment from 5-star linebacker Cooper Witten, the son of former NFL tight end Jason Witten, according to The Athletic's Grace Raynor.

He chose Oklahoma over Georgia, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

Witten is considered the No. 25 prospect in the Class of 2027, the No. 4 player from the state of Texas and the No. 2 linebacker, per 247Sports' Composite Rankings.

Gabe Brooks of 247Sports noted that the younger Witten is an "athletic, physical, likely role-versatile second-level defensive piece who plays with a relentless motor" and has "natural football IQ, awareness, instincts. He is "experienced at safety, but [his] physical specs and play style would easily translate to off-ball linebacker in the long term. Presents high-floor competency with simultaneous high-ceiling developmental potential as one of the most intriguing defensive prospects at this early stage in the 2027 class."

His commitment to Oklahoma isn't a major surprise—his father is serving in his first year as the team's tight ends coach on Brent Venables' staff. But the defensive chops of Venables were among the main factors in the decision.

"Coach Venables' résumé speaks for itself," he told Sam Spiegelman of Rivals. "The success on defense he's had over the years is an opportunity I couldn't turn down."

Oklahoma is off to the races in the Class of 2027, currently sitting atop 247Sports' Composite Team Rankings after also securing commitments from a pair of 5-star offensive tackles, Kaeden Penny and Cooper Hackett, along with six 4-star recruits and five 3-stars.
