Minkah Fitzpatrick Reportedly Traded to Jets and Lands New Contract, What Did Dolphins Get for DB?
The Miami Dolphins reportedly traded safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the AFC East rival New York Jets on Monday.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are receiving the Los Angeles Chargers' 2026 seventh-round draft pick in the deal, and the Jets are subsequently signing Fitzpatrick to a a three-year, $40 million contract extension.
The Dolphins' decision to part ways with Fitzpatrick doesn't come as a large surprise, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that they were having trade discussions with multiple teams involving the five-time Pro Bowler on Feb. 18.
Fitzpatrick also reportedly generated interest from opposing front offices ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline during the 2025 season.
The 29-year-old started 14 games for the Dolphins in 2025, racking up 82 tackles, six passes defended, four tackles for loss, one sack and one interception.
He allowed a 103.6 passer rating when targeted, according to Pro Football Focus.
While Fitzpatrick's overall production represented a step down compared to past years, it's worth noting that he earned three consecutive Pro Bowl nods from 2022-24 as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After opening his career with the Dolphins in 2018, he was dealt to the Steelers during the 2019 season. Fitzpatrick appeared in 88 games across six years in Pittsburgh before he was traded back to Miami in June 2025.
His Steelers tenure was extremely successful, amassing 45 passes defended and 18 interceptions as a member of the organization. He also earned three First Team All-Pro selections.
Fitzpatrick will carry a cap hit of just over $18.8 million for the 2026 season before his extension kicks in.
The Jets are coming off a 3-14 season and they are in the midst of a 15-year playoff drought, but Fitzpatrick could help make the defense more competitive under head coach Aaron Glenn in 2026 after ranking 25th in total defense and 31st in scoring defense in 2025.
