"I felt like now was the right time," Mingo said of his commitment, per ESPN's Jeff Borzello. "And what made it the right time for the decision is seeing Caleb Wilson and Seth Trimble wear the North Carolina blue on their chest with so much pride. It shows the true culture they have there."
He added: "I chose UNC because it felt like a family environment, from the players, fans, to the coaches. I felt like the UNC history and everyone who played there is huge. Knowing their will to win is always at the highest level. I would love to be a part of that."
Mingo is the second member of UNC's 2026 recruiting class, joining 5-star small forward Maximo Adams, who is ranked as the No. 6 small forward in the nation in 247Sports' composite.
247Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein described Mingo as "a big guard with length, versatility, natural feel for the game, and an ability to get wherever he wants with the ball in his hands."
"He has a tight handle, can break his defender down with combo-moves, navigate a crowded lane instinctively, make reads out of ball-screens, utilize both hands, and create for himself and others," Finkelstein added. "He is also a terrific perimeter rebounder (7.6 per game), very disruptive defender (2 steals), and simultaneously capable of guarding multiple positions."
Mingo should be able to make an immediate impact as soon as he steps foot on campus in Chapel Hill. He will have every opportunity to establish himself as a lottery pick in the 2027 NBA draft.
The Tar Heels will try to keep the positive vibes going when they face NC State (18-8) on Tuesday night.
