Trayvon Mullen Tweets Top 3: Which School Best Fits the Nation's No. 3 CB?
Pompano Beach, Florida, 4-star cornerback Trayvon Mullen has made trips all over the country and thoroughly done his research in finding a college home for the future. Monday night, the nation's No. 3 cornerback narrowed his list of 46 offers to three.
And the battle among the top three is expected to be competitive.
Mullen named LSU, Florida State and Clemson as his leaders, and while he added that he doesn't have a leader—and he isn't "blocking any school out"—the race will be interesting to see if Florida State can keep a top athlete close to home or if LSU can build on its "DBU" moniker.
Currently, Mullen's 247Sports Crystal Ball has him headed to LSU (62 percent). A commitment to LSU would mean the Tigers have three of the nation's top defensive backs committed in Mullen (No. 3 cornerback, No. 37 player overall), 5-star cornerback Saivion Smith (No. 2 cornerback, No. 13 overall) and 5-star safety Eric Monroe (No. 2 safety, No. 26 overall).
Add in players like 4-star cornerback Greedy Williams and 4-star safety Cameron Lewis, and the Tigers' secondary of the future looks very bright. It wouldn't be a surprise if Mullen chose to join a group like this.
Mullen visited LSU on July 22 and told 247Sports' Ryan Bartow that he could see himself getting coached by defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, a likable recruiter to a lot of recruits.
"I like him as a person and as a coach," Mullen said. "He can help me get to the next level and help be become a man and a better person."
As attractive as LSU may look, Florida State has an attractive class, as well. Mullen can join 5-star cornerback Levonta Taylor, the nation's top-ranked cornerback and No. 6 player overall, in Jimbo Fisher's secondary. Additionally, Kyle Meyers is a 3-star cornerback whom the Seminoles are very high on.
Florida State trails LSU in Mullen's 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, but you can bet Fisher and defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Charles Kelly are doing all they can to make sure Mullen stays in state. It also should be noted that, per Safid Deen of the Tallahassee Democrat, Mullen's mother and younger brother visited the Florida State campus, while Mullen stayed home overcoming illness.
You can bet someone like former running back Will Burnham is hoping Mullen chooses the Seminoles.
The wild card in this equation is Clemson. Mullen was offered by by Tigers in May of last year, and, per TigerNet.com, called Clemson his "dream school" at the time. Mullen has built a solid relationship with defensive coordinator Brent Venables, and an opportunity to be the marquee defensive player of the class is there if he wants it.
Clemson currently has 11 commitments in its 2016 class, but none of them are committed to play in the secondary. Mullen not only can be the class' top defensive target, but also someone who can challenge for playing time as a freshman and, potentially, all-conference status in the ACC.
Now a shade under 6'2" and 172 pounds, Mullen possesses great speed, length and instincts at the cornerback position. He can be put on an island without concern, and he uses his body well against both smaller and larger receivers.

At The Opening last month in Oregon, Mullen ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds, showed a vertical jump of 35 inches and threw the power ball 36 feet. He's run the 40-yard dash in less than 4.4 seconds on various occasions.
LSU is an early favorite to win Mullen over, but Florida State and Clemson are doing their parts in selling their programs—as are the other schools that didn't make his top three. He's said that any school can work its way into the top three, but it'll be tough for another school to beat the current three.
The winning school will get a playmaker, someone who can be a major asset early and often.
