NBA Insider Predicts Giannis Has 'Played His Last Game in a Bucks Uniform' amid Trade Rumors
Whether or not he gets traded before the deadline, Giannis Antetokounmpo's final game as a member of the Milwaukee Bucks may have already occurred.
ESPN's Marc Spears said on NBA Today on Monday that he believes Antetokounmpo won't suit up for the Bucks again.
"I think he's played his last game in a Bucks uniform," Spears said. "I mean, cause there's so much benefit for him not playing. One, you could make a trade for him now with Atlanta and get that generational piece, the No. 1 pick or No. 2 pick. If you play him, and you win, that just pushes that potential pick back further."
Whether the Bucks plan to move on from Antetokounmpo is still unclear, as is whether a trade would occur before the deadline or over the summer.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported Sunday that "multiple teams continue to try to engage the Bucks on a Giannis deal that they would like to consummate before the Feb. 5 deadline," so it appears Milwaukee will have plenty of suitors if it decides to go ahead and trade him. However, Stein also noted that there is "still no clear-cut indication that the Bucks are willing to entertain the prospect of an Antetokounmpo deal before draft time in the spring."
The severity of the two-time MVP's latest injury could play a factor in his potential trade timeline. Antetokounmpo said last week that he is set to miss four to six weeks because of another calf injury, but head coach Doc Rivers told reporters Monday that "there's no timetable" for his return.
Rivers also said the Bucks have given "no thought" about resting their star for the remainder of the season.
Milwaukee is sitting in 11th place in the Eastern Conference at 18-26, and an extended absence for Antetokounmpo will likely only lead to more struggles. If the Bucks are leaning towards trading Antetokounmpo, it could be worth it to let him sit for the rest of the year while they try to improve their draft position.
