Top Brandon Aiyuk Landing Spots if 49ers Release Star WR

Moe MotonJan 22, 2026

In the San Francisco 49ers' end-of-season press conference, general manager John Lynch told the media what many expected—that the team would part ways with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk hasn't suited up since Week 7 of the 2024 season when he tore the ACL, MCL and meniscus in his right knee. During his rehab process last offseason, it became clear the 27-year-old wideout and the club were headed for a divorce.

According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Aiyuk skipped "multiple rehab sessions," which preceded the 49ers voiding the guarantees in his four-year, $120 million contract.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke about the disconnect that left the club confused and in need of a resolution:

"I'd say it officially stopped for me when the last time I tried to get ahold of him and couldn't and then tried a couple more times and still couldn't. And then that matched everyone else that was trying to get ahold of him to come in. And eventually there's not much of an explanation because it's really hard for us and anyone else to understand, and that's why it's something I've never seen in 22 years of coaching. It's unfortunate and it's confusing because it's confusing for all of us, but it eventually becomes 'it is what it is.'"

This saga likely concludes with Aiyuk's release after Lynch and Shanahan made the unraveling of the team-player relationship a matter of public record.

So, what's next for Aiyuk?

Though he's coming off significant injuries, the sixth-year veteran is still in his prime and saw increasing receiving yard totals through his first four mostly healthy seasons.

If the 49ers cut Aiyuk, he'll have a healthy market, especially within a mediocre group of free-agent wideouts this offseason. Here are the top five landing spots for him based on team need, cap space and schematic fit.

Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen

As the Buffalo Bills play the blame game about who's most responsible for drafting underwhelming 2024 second-round wideout Keon Coleman, they may keep tabs on Aiyuk's interest in teaming up with 2024 league MVP Josh Allen.

In the past, general manager Brandon Beane has bristled at criticisms over his receiver depth chart, but after the Bills came up short in another mid-January playoff exit, he may be willing to take a big swing for a high-end pass-catcher.

This season, Khalil Shakir led the Bills across most receiving categories, hauling in 72 of 95 targets for 719 yards and four touchdowns. He's a solid receiver who operates primarily out of the slot, but the 6-foot, 190-pounder doesn't put fear in defenders in critical situations or in the red zone.

Four years into his career, Shakir hasn't scored more than four touchdowns or racked up more than 821 receiving yards in a single season. Also, he's averaged fewer than 11 yards per catch in consecutive terms.

Averaging 14.6 yards per reception, Aiyuk would be a significant upgrade over Shakir as a big-play receiver and pose more of a scoring threat. The 49ers' soon-to-be ex-receiver has 25 career touchdown receptions. Shakir has 11.

The Bills would need to free up cap space to make room for Aiyuk. That said, when healthy, the talented receiver has shown that he can be a go-to target for a passing attack that needs consistency and a spark.

Las Vegas Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Tre Tucker

Between two front-office regimes, the Las Vegas Raiders traded wide receivers Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers in back-to-back seasons, leaving them with Tre Tucker, Tyler Lockett and rookie second-rounder Jack Bech as their top wideouts this season.

Lockett is 33 and will be a free agent in the offseason. Bech made minimal impact in his first year as a pro. Tucker has made strides through three seasons, but he's not a reliable down-to-down receiver who commands targets in big moments.

Las Vegas will likely draft quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick. He's going to need more than All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers to elevate the Raiders' 28th-ranked aerial attack.

With a projected $82.4 million in cap space for the 2026 offseason, the second-most league-wide, Las Vegas can afford to pursue a top receiver on the open market.

Keep in mind that Aiyuk is from Reno, Nevada. So, he could enjoy a homecoming at Allegiant Stadium as the Raiders' No. 1 receiver catching passes from the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. That sounds like an appealing situation that will motivate him to stay dialed in for the long haul.

Los Angeles Chargers

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh leads with a no-nonsense approach. Someone may have to talk him into stamping an approval on signing Aiyuk, and that could be his new offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, who worked with the receiver for two years in San Francisco.

McDaniel saw Aiyuk's early development up close in the Bay Area. With his knowledge of the receiver's strengths, the Chargers may want to bring in someone familiar with their new offense.

Turning 34 in April, Keenan Allen is on an expiring contract. The Chargers can replace him with Aiyuk, who would join Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston for a strong three-receiver set, while 2025 second-rounder Tre Harris comes along in a well-rounded group.

With the addition of McDaniel and Aiyuk, quarterback Justin Herbert may be able to get over the hump during the playoffs. He'll have the innovative play-caller and the supporting cast to go up and down the field against the most stingy pass defenses.

The Chargers are projected to have $80.3 million in cap space, which would allow them to make strong bids for Aiyuk in a potentially competitive market.

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan

During Aiyuk's contractual standoff with the 49ers during the 2024 offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a deal in place to acquire him.

Pittsburgh will turn over its coaching staff following head coach Mike Tomlin's resignation, though general manager Omar Khan remains and will likely pursue Aiyuk during his free-agent bid.

The Steelers don't have a clear-cut No. 2 receiver to complement D.K. Metcalf. Also, Metcalf had an up-and-down first year in Pittsburgh, finishing the campaign on a two-game suspension and a season-low 850 receiving yards.

Whoever starts at quarterback would have a good chance to rack up passing yards with a Metcalf-Aiyuk tandem on the perimeter. They could uplift a young signal-caller if the Steelers are unable to convince Aaron Rodgers to return for another year.

Of course, Pittsburgh's new coaching staff will be a factor in how hard the front office pushes for Aiyuk.

Nonetheless, the Steelers will have a projected $37.8 million in cap space, which should be enough to sign Aiyuk and address other roster needs.

Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

If the Washington Commanders want to see quarterback Jayden Daniels make strides after an injury-riddled regression year, they need to add more playmakers around him.

Last offseason, the Commanders signed Terry McLaurin to a three-year, $68.2 million extension, but he'll be 31 at the start of the 2026 season. Deebo Samuel will be a free agent in March. No other wideout on Washington's roster racked up more than 225 receiving yards this season.

Tight end Zach Ertz played a significant role in the passing game, recording 50 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns, but he tore his ACL early in December and is headed toward free agency at 35 years old.

The Commanders can bring in a prime receiver who has a rapport with their young, promising quarterback. In 2019, Daniels and Aiyuk played together at Arizona State; the latter broke out that year with 65 receptions for 1,192 yards and eight touchdowns.

Whoever the Commanders hire to be their offensive coordinator would likely be on board with an Aiyuk-Daniels reunion for the passing attack.
