Giannis Explains Why He Booed Bucks Fans Back During 33-Point Loss to T-Wolves

All boos are the same to Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, regardless of whether they're coming from his own fans.

The Fiserv Forum crowd let the Bucks players know how they feel during Tuesday's 139-106 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Giannis responded in kind in the third quarter, putting two thumbs down and booing the fans after scoring inside.

Giannis explained how that's his normal reaction to jeers in any setting, even a home game.

"I play basketball for my teammates. I play basketball for myself and my family," he said, per ESPN's Jamal Collier. "When people don't believe in me, I don't tend to be with them. I tend to do what I'm here to do, what I'm good at. ... It won't change home or away. But yeah, I've never been a part of something like that before and I don't think it's fair. I don't. But everybody has their opinion to do what they want to do."

This comes against the backdrop of steady speculation and rumors surrounding Antetokounmpo's future in Milwaukee.

The nine-time All-Star told The Athletic's Sam Amick he has no plans to press the issue and demand a trade.

"There will never be a chance, and there will never be a moment that I will come out and say I want a trade," he said. "That's not … in … my … nature. OK?"

Those comments didn't totally silence the outside perception that a separation is increasingly likely — be it before the Feb. 5 trade deadline or in the summer — due to Milwaukee's on-court struggles.

The Bucks are 17-23, having dropped three of their last four. They're 11th in the Eastern Conference and 1.5 games behind the Chicago Bulls for the final play-in berth.

Antetokounmpo isn't going to turn around and request to be traded solely because he and his teammates got a frosty reception in Milwaukee. Still, Giannis booing Bucks fans makes for a striking image, and it symbolizes the general sense of frustration with how the season is unfolding.
