Joakim Soria to Pirates: Latest Trade Details, Comments, Reaction

Joseph ZuckerJul 30, 2015

The Detroit Tigers didn't just stop with the David Price trade Thursday. They reportedly sent Joakim Soria to the Pittsburgh Pirates for infielder prospect JaCoby Jones, the team announced.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman initially reported the deal.

Detroit started off the day by dealing Price to the Toronto Blue Jays, per ESPN.com, which signaled the Tigers were firmly going to be sellers at the deadline. If they've essentially waved the white flag for 2015, trading their closer—who's a free agent at the end of the year—is a sensible move.

Although Mark Melancon is leading MLB in saves, the Pirates' bullpen was a slight issue for the team, at least in terms of depth. Pittsburgh's relievers rank 16th in FIP (3.59) and 18th in wins above replacement (1.4).

In 43 appearances, Soria has 23 saves and a 3-1 record. His 2.85 ERA is a little deceiving, with his 4.81 FIP and 3.71 xFIP stronger indicators as to his individual performance.

As MLB.com's Tom Singer noted the biggest concern about Soria going forward isn't really performance-based but rather if he can stay healthy:

Soria had Tommy John surgery in 2012 and missed the entire 2012 as a result. His recovery also ate into the 2013 campaign, during which he debuted in July.

As long as he avoids injury, the 31-year-old will be a great setup option for Pittsburgh and an emergency closer when the situation calls for it. MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo noted the different way teams are now approaching the composition of their bullpens:

Barring a late collapse, the Pirates should at least finish with one of the two wild-card spots in the National League, and adding another proven reliever would put Pittsburgh on even stronger footing in a one-game playoff.

For the Tigers, the Soria trade is another sign the team's front office is looking more toward the future. It's anybody's guess as to whom Detroit will place in the closer role from here. Joe Nathan is the only other Tigers player who has recorded a save, and he's out for the year. Alex Wilson and Blaine Hardy are the likeliest options.
