Cowboys Legend Jason Witten, Oklahoma Reportedly Agree to Contract as TEs Coach
Oklahoma's tight ends will have a legend of the position coaching them starting with the 2026 season.
Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported Thursday that the Sooners hired former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten as their new tight ends coach.
In 2021, ESPN's Todd Archer reported Witten was offered "several NFL and major college football opportunities as an assistant coach" following his retirement before he decided to instead become the head coach of Liberty Christian high school in Texas.
Notably, his son Cooper attends the school and is a highly regarded linebacker prospect in the 2027 recruiting class.
According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Cooper Witten is a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 linebacker in his class. Oklahoma is among the list of schools that have made him an offer, and it now has quite an advantage over the other programs hoping to land him as part of their 2027 classes.
Witten was a third-round pick in the 2003 NFL draft and played his first 15 years with the Cowboys. He returned to the NFC East team in 2019 after retiring for the 2018 campaign and then finished his career on the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020.
His resume includes 11 Pro Bowl nods, two First-Team All-Pro selections and four seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards. He was a foundational building block for Dallas for more than a decade and ended his career with 1,228 catches for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns.
That is good enough for fourth on the NFL's all-time list of catches, 22nd in receiving yards and 43rd in receiving touchdowns.
Witten is an all-time great and a Cowboys legend, and now he will be helping the next generation of tight ends at the collegiate level.
