Chicago also has Colin Rea after signing him to a one-year contract on Nov. 6. Rea made 27 starts in 2025, but has experience as a bullpen option and could primarily operate in a reliever role.
As for Cabrera, the Cubs' interest in him has been apparent.
On Sunday, Heyman reported that Chicago and New York were both targeting the 27-year-old while the San Francisco Giants were among other teams interested.
Cabrera has spent all five years of his MLB career with the Marlins and is coming off a breakout 2025 season. He finished with a record of 8-7 in 26 starts, posting a 3.53 ERA to go along with 1.228 WHIP.
Cabrera is armed with a fastball that contained an average velocity of 97 miles per hour last season while using his signature changeup to rack up strikeouts (via FanGraphs).
He recorded 150 strikeouts compared to 48 walks in 2025, owning a career average of 10 strikeouts per nine innings.
Cabrera's age and contract status also made him an enticing option on the trade market, as he's under team control through 2028.
The Cubs wrapped up their first postseason appearance since 2020 last year, narrowly falling to the Milwaukee Brewers in five games during the National League Division Series.
