Athletics, GM David Forst Agree to Part Ways Amid 2026 Season Struggles, Dan Feinstein Named Interim

The Athletics and general manager David Forst have "mutually agreed to part ways," per a team press release. Dan Feinstein will take over as the team's interim GM for the rest of 2026, and the team will now begin a search for a new GM.

The 45-70 A's have lost 12 of their last 13 games and are tied with the Colorado Rockies for MLB's second-worst record (the 44-71 Los Angeles Angels sit last in the league).

Forst joined the organization in 2000 as a scout. He became the team's assistant general manager in 2004 and got promoted to general manager after the 2015 season, when Billy Beane was promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations.

After the 2022 season, Beane became a senior advisor to owner John Fisher, leading to Forst serving as the franchise's new head of baseball operations.

The Athletics commonly have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball, and that's the case again this year. Per Spotrac, the Athletics' payroll sits at $96.3 million, the fifth-lowest mark in the league.

So competing with the rest of the major leagues has always been a challenge, but the Athletics have held their own and then some over the years. They have made the playoffs 11 times since 2000, including three straight occasions from 2018-2020. Forst certainly played a role in that success.

The A's have struggled since 2022, however, with records of 60-102, 50-112, 69-93 and 76-86 over their last four full seasons. This year will certainly see the A's miss the playoffs again.

So the A's now turn the page toward new leadership as their move from Sacramento to Las Vegas at the beginning of the 2028 MLB season also looms.
