MLB Trade Deadline: Wildest Social Buzz on the Final Day
Rumors are swirling, and deals are getting done. The MLB trade deadline is set for 4 p.m. ET, but buyers and sellers have been busy all day—not to mention the reporters breaking the news.
In the craziness that was the week leading up to Friday's deadline, stars changed hands and prospects were scoured. There was the 13-player, three-team trade, per USA Today, and a player cried on the field when he realized he was traded—but then actually wasn't.
MLB's official Twitter account summed up the action perfectly—with four hours still to go:

But the final day brings a buzz and excitement to social media that can, at times, exceed that of the postseason.
Baseball reporters across the country are quoting sources and finding scoops that require a constant refresh of one's Twitter timeline.
Below, we compile all of Friday's rumors, done deals and possible moves floating around the Internet.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported the Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Gerardo Parra from the Milwaukee Brewers:
"Source: #Orioles closing in on #Brewers’ Parra. Deal expected to be Parra for RHP Zack Davies, straight up.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2015"
The 28-year-old Parra is hitting .328 this season and has been one of the best offensive outfielders in the league, per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com:
"National League leaders in outfield OPS: 1) Harper, 1.153; 2) Stanton, .952; 3) Gerardo Parra, .886; 4) McCutchen, .880.
— Jerry Crasnick (@jcrasnick) July 31, 2015"
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Orioles may not be done before the deadline:
"The Orioles could still make a Yoenis Cespedes deal work, even after getting Gerardo Parra.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) July 31, 2015"
Two of Friday's hottest targets are closers. The San Diego Padres' Craig Kimbrel and the Cincinnati Reds' Aroldis Chapman are garnering a few teams' interest, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman and USA Today's Bob Nightengale:
"word is, houston ownership is interested in chapman. they also are on kimbrel. seek back-end pen help.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2015"
"The price tag is high on #Reds Chapman, but with 5 teams involved, and three seriously, someone should meet their demands
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) July 31, 2015"
Along with Kimbrel, the Padres' other trade pieces include outfielders Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Will Venable; starters James Shields and Tyson Ross; and reliever Joaquin Benoit:
"padres said to be talking to astros, red sox, cubs, probably everyone else. all eyes are on them. again.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2015"
Yet San Diego is standing pat so far, per Yahoo Sports Jeff Passan:
"Shockingly, Padres one of just five teams that haven't made a trade with deadline in 3 1/2 hours. Others: Cubs, White Sox, Twins, D'backs.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 31, 2015"
The New York Mets were close to acquiring Reds outfielder Jay Bruce, per Rosenthal:
"Sources: #Mets worked into night on trade for #Reds’ Bruce. Expectation among many in industry is that deal will happen.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2015"
Crasnick suggested otherwise, though:
"Hearing the Jay Bruce talks may have lost momentum. #Reds having second thoughts about #Mets trade package.
— Jerry Crasnick (@jcrasnick) July 31, 2015"
Either way, the Mets are reportedly looking for an outfielder after losing out on the Brewers' Carlos Gomez earlier this week:
"Outfielders who are or could be in play for #Mets: Bruce, Cespedes, R. Davis, Venable. Cuddyer may not be back. Questions about Lagares.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 31, 2015"
"#Mets are talking lots of scenarios and believe they will get bat(s)
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) July 31, 2015"
"mets greatest concern is lagares in CF. so rajai davis & venable could work. but upton/cespedes more lineup impact.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2015"
The Toronto Blue Jays, busy early in the week, added reliever Mark Lowe on Friday, per Heyman:
"mark lowe does indeed go to jays in deal for minor leaguers
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2015"
The former Seattle Mariners pitcher upgrades a shaky Toronto pen:
"The Jays are getting Mark Lowe in a year in which he has dominated: A 1.00 ERA, 11 walks, 47 strikeouts in 36 innings.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) July 31, 2015"
Just past midnight on deadline day, the San Francisco Giants acquired starting pitcher Mike Leake from the Reds for two minor leaguers, per Heyman:
"mike leake goes to giants
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2015"
The defending World Series champs, sitting just 0.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West, have improved their rotation and present a good landing spot for Leake:
"a home run for mike leake: goes to home state, has known bochys forever, gets great team/defense & big park #SFGiants
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeymanCBS) July 31, 2015"
"I will always have great memories in Cincinnati but looking forward to joining my new teammates and helping Giants try to win another title
— Mike Leake (@MikeLeake44) July 31, 2015"
Fox Sports' Jon Morosi pointed out that Leake has been one of the top starting pitchers as of late:
"Mike Leake's ERA this month: 1.25, fifth-best in the majors.
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) July 31, 2015"
The Cole Hamels trade between the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers, reportedly agreed upon Wednesday, became official Friday, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark:
"Remember that Cole Hamels deal you thought got done like 38 hours ago? Finally official. He's starting for #Rangers tomorrow.
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 31, 2015"
Not long after, the Phillies offered a tribute to their former ace, whose last start in Philadelphia was a no-hitter:
"#ThankYouCole pic.twitter.com/Pbbb0HZA4M
— Phillies (@Phillies) July 31, 2015"
The St. Louis Cardinals traded for reliever Jonathan Broxton, according to Crasnick. Broxton, most recently with the Brewers, has a 5.89 ERA in 36.2 innings pitched this season.
"They love adding ex-closers - and have had a lot of success doing it. https://t.co/5jlt1Eh5mW
— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 31, 2015"
The two-time All-Star, along with the newly acquired Steve Cishek, adds to a deep St. Louis bullpen, per Passan:
"Cardinals bullpen depth is immense. Rosey, Siegrist, Cishek, Tui, Maness, Socolovich, Villanueva, Choate. Add Broxton, and Walden back soon.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 31, 2015"
If all this wasn't crazy enough for you, don't forget about all the star-studded and blockbuster deals that went down earlier in the week.
Expect the fireworks to keep rolling in during the final hours leading up to the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline. It should be a frenzy, as ESPN's Jim Bowden pointed out:
"Put your seat belts on there will be a flurry of trades that are done but won't be announced until final hour according to several GMs
— Jim Bowden (@JimBowden_ESPN) July 31, 2015"
