How Much Did Texas Tech Reportedly Spend on CFB Roster That Lost to Oregon in CFP?
Texas Tech's high-priced roster wasn't enough for a deep run in the College Football Playoff, as the team lost 23-0 to Oregon in Thursday's quarterfinal game at the Capital One Orange Bowl.
Pete Nakos of On3.com reported in July that Texas Tech's roster was "set to cost north of" $28 million, making its quick ouster from the CFP even more disappointing.
"A year ago, Texas Tech would probably not have cracked the top 10," Nakos explained of the team's pricey roster. "But the Red Raiders burst onto the spending scene this offseason with billionaire booster Cody Campbell, putting together the nation's top-ranked portal class while retaining their roster. That doesn't come without deep pockets. With so much money spent, expectations are high for Texas Tech to deliver on the field."
The Red Raiders landed high-profile transfers like Colorado offensive lineman Cash Cleveland and Stanford edge rusher David Bailey. Nakos also noted that they outbid Ohio State for USC running back Quinten Joyner, which cost them "roughly $700,000."
It initially looked like things paid off for Texas Tech, as the team earned the No. 4 seed in the CFP after going 12-1 and winning the Big 12 championship. The Red Raiders entered their quarterfinal against the Ducks ranked fifth in the nation with 480.3 total yards per game and second with 42.5 points per game.
Unfortunately, Oregon's defense was able to completely stifle Texas Tech with a shutout victory that included four takeaways.
The Red Raiders will now have to go back to the drawing board and figure out their best course to contend for a national title next season.
