Draymond Green, Steve Kerr Apologized to Warriors After Viral Video of Heated Exchange
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said he and star forward Draymond Green apologized to one another and to the team after their tense exchange on the bench overshadowed a 120-97 win over the Orlando Magic on Monday night.
Green left the bench and headed to the locker room midway through the third quarter. He didn't return to the game.
"Monday was not my finest hour," Kerr told reporters Wednesday. "I talked to Draymond today. Apologized to him. He apologized to me. We apologized to the team. I know who Draymond is, and we want the same thing. I want him to finish his career with the Warriors."
The coach added he and Green are "far more alike than many would realize."
Neither Kerr nor Green divulged what specifically was said on the bench. Pressed on the topic, the four-time All-Star said he and the coach were talking about "basketball."
"Tempers spilled over, and I thought it was best that I get out of there," he told reporters. "I don't think it was a situation where it was going to get better, so it was best to remove myself."
During his turn with the media, teammate Stephen Curry lamented after the Magic game how "the vibes of the questions are a little bit more negative than they should be" because of the focus on the argument:
Ahead of Thursday's Christmas Day matchup with the Dallas Mavericks, Kerr called the Warriors "a fading dynasty" but made it clear he's still aiming to go deep into the NBA playoffs.
As one of the few remaining holdovers from the height of the organization's incredible, Green figures to be a key piece in that quest.
His argument with then-teammate Kevin Durant during the 2018-19 season proved to have lasting consequences, while his training camp incident with Jordan Poole in October 2022 had a similar effect.
The Warriors will hope Kerr and Green can successfully move on from what transpired Monday night.
