"So when you really take a look at what can drive this quarterback market, it's going to be the most expensive in the history of college football," he added.
Dylan Raiola should be among the top signal-callers generating interest in the portal, as he reportedly plans to transfer from Nebraska.
Raiola already generated plenty of buzz throughout his first two years with the Cornhuskers, as his NIL valuation of $2.5 million ranks No. 9 among all college athletes (via On3.com).
He's also coming off an encouraging sophomore season in which he completed 72.4 percent of his throws for 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns compared to six interceptions in nine games.
The 20-year-old has two years of eligibility remaining.
Thamel reported Friday that there's been "smoke" involving Raiola potentially joining Louisville, but noted that a College Football Playoff team might also enter the mix.
Other notable quarterbacks entering the portal include TCU's Josh Hoover, Arizona State's Sam Leavitt, Cincinnati's Brendan Sorsby and Florida's DJ Lagway.
With teams searching for more stability under center as they attempt to make a push for the expanded 12-team playoff field, it could lead to a bidding war for the top passers available.
The portal will officially open on Jan. 2 and close on Jan. 16.
