What Is Chip Kelly's Next Job? Former Raiders OC Reportedly Interviews for CFB Opening
Chip Kelly may be heading back to college.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, the former Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator has "emerged as a name of note" in Georgia Tech's search for a new OC and "sources have confirmed that Kelly has interviewed for the position. Jackets Online reported Wednesday that Kelly was at Georgia Tech's bowl practice prep, checking things out."
Georgia Tech has a vacancy at the position after former offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner took the same job at Florida under head coach Jon Sumrall. He left behind big shoes to fill, as the Yellow Jackets finished 12th in the nation in scoring (38.3 PPG) this season.
Kelly, 62, was fired midseason as the offensive coordinator of the Raiders after the team started 2-9 and was lackluster offensively.
"I am grateful for the opportunity with the Raiders; bottom line in this league you have to win," he told Fox Sports' Jay Glazer after his firing. "I really loved those players. I'm a huge, huge Geno Smith fan. That was one of the best parts of this experience for me, working with Geno and those guys every day. But hey, we got to win. I get it."
He certainly brings a lengthy résumé to Georgia Tech, with gigs as a head coach at Oregon (2009-12), the Philadelphia Eagles (2013-16) and UCLA (2018-23) and offensive coordinator jobs with New Hampshire (1999-06), Oregon (2007-08), Ohio State (2024) and most recently the Raiders.
Georgia Tech is coming off back-to-back 7-6 games and will face BYU on Dec. 27 in this year's Pop-Tarts Bowl. It's possible that the Yellow Jackets will have a new offensive coordinator in place by then, with Kelly emerging as a possibility.
