Tulane Reportedly Name Will Hall HC Ahead of CFP Game as Sumrall Becomes Florida HC
Tulane is promoting Will Hall to replace Jon Sumrall as head coach, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Hall was the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach this season, having also worked as the Green Wave's offensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020.
Sumrall is on the way out after accepting the Florida job, though he's still coaching Tulane through the College Football Playoff.
A lot of fans will see Hall as an uninspiring choice on the heels of such a successful season. He coached Southern Miss across four seasons and posted a 14-30 record. The Golden Eagles sent him packing seven games into the 2024 campaign.
The 45-year-old was much better at the lower levels. He spent three years apiece at West Alabama and West Georgia and guided his team to the Division II playoffs on four occasions.
Maybe Hall learned from his mistakes at Southern Miss and will make the most of his second chance. Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com believes the continuity he provides will be a strength as well:
Willie Fritz won 23 games over his final two years before leaving for Houston, while Sumrall needed just two seasons before he was on the radar of Power Four programs.
This is an attractive gig for aspiring coaches who want to win and then take the next step in their careers. Tulane seemingly would've had some strong candidates if it wanted to look outside of the program.
Maybe athletic director David Harris will get the last laugh by selecting somebody with ties to Fritz and Sumrall instead.
