Will Lane Kiffin Get Contract Bonus If Ole Miss Wins CFP Title After Exit for LSU?

Lane Kiffin won't be coaching Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff this season after taking the head-coaching gig at LSU, but he will benefit financially from a deep Rebels run.

According to Wilson Alexander of The Advocate, LSU "agreed to pay [Kiffin] what he 'would have been entitled to receive' if he had stayed at Ole Miss during the CFP, including $150,000 if the Rebels play in the first round as expected or up to $1 million if they win the national championship."

Kiffin had hoped to continue at Ole Miss for the remainder of the season after taking the LSU job, but Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter understandably said no.

LSU gave Kiffin millions of reasons to get over that disappointment, however, signing him to a seven-year, $91 million deal that will pay him $13 million per season, a coaching AAV second only to Georgia's Kirby Smart ($13.2 million).

But Kiffin has other incentives baked into his LSU contract. Per Alexander, the school will pay his $3 million buyout from Ole Miss. LSU will also owe him $80 percent of his remaining contract if it fires him and the deal "does not include any mitigation or offset clauses that would reduce the cost if Kiffin got another job, fully guaranteeing his compensation. LSU would not have to pay him if he was fired for cause."

And Kiffin stands to make a $1 million bonus if LSU wins an SEC title and $3 million for a national championship.

LSU's courtship of Kiffin has been a huge story for weeks, leading to quite the ordeal around the Ole Miss program as it was trying to secure a playoff berth. His departure wasn't pretty.

But ultimately, it was pretty profitable. And if he eventually leads LSU back to prominence, the joy in Baton Rouge will drown out the animosity back in Oxford.
