Marshall Faulk Hired as Southern HC After Stint on Deion Sanders' Colorado Staff
After getting his first taste of coaching on Deion Sanders' staff at Colorado, Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk is making the jump to the head coaching position.
Southern University announced Saturday it has hired Faulk as its next head coach. He will be introduced on Monday, Dec. 1 at 12 p.m. ET.
NFL Insider Jordan Schultz initially reported that Faulk had accepted the head coaching job at Southern University on a three-year contract.
The move comes after Faulk served as the Buffaloes running back coach this past season.
Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today first reported Faulk was considered a candidate to take over at Southern University. Schrotenboer added that a university official confirmed that a news conference to announce a new coach could come as soon as Monday, Dec. 1.
While Faulk had no coaching experience prior to joining the Buffaloes, his personal ties could make the job at Southern more attractive. The university is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Faulk grew up in New Orleans and made a name for himself before attending San Diego State and embarking on a Hall of Fame career in the NFL.
Sanders, who began his college coaching career at Jackson State in 2020, has helped create an avenue for former players to become coaches at Historically Black Colleges and Universities despite not having much formal coaching experience. DeSean Jackson (Delaware State) and Michael Vick (Norfolk State) are among the former players to try their hands at coaching this year.
Southern closed out the 2025 season on Saturday with a win against Grambling State to finish 2-10 on the year. The team fired head coach Terrence Graves in October following a 1-6 start.
Faulk and Colorado recently wrapped up their season on Saturday with a loss to Kansas State. The Buffaloes finished the year 3-9.
