Updated Coaching Replacements for Arne Slot After Liverpool's Champions League Elimination

Leo CollisApr 14, 2026

After Liverpool's quarterfinal exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, the Reds will not be following up last season's title success with more silverware in the 2025-26 campaign.

After a woeful first leg, Liverpool at least kept PSG honest at Anfield for just over an hour. However, a moment of class from Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembélé silenced the crowd and left hopes of a dramatic turnaround in tatters. He added to his tally just before full-time to confirm another 2-0 victory and Liverpool's European exit.

It's been a dreadful season for the Merseysiders, with a number of factors contributing to their downward spiral since the heights of last year.

As it is with football, though, it's the manager who usually takes the fall, and Arne Slot is increasingly losing the faith among fans and pundits.

The Dutchman has told reporters that he has the club's backing heading into next season, but how many times have we heard that from managers before? It wouldn't be a surprise if a shortlist to succeed the 47-year-old has already been drafted and redrafted several times in the last couple of months.

But who could be among the names earmarked to take the Reds' hot seat? Ahead, we've selected a few who could lead Liverpool into a new era.

Xabi Alonso

After his perhaps unfair exit from Real Madrid in January, Xabi Alonso has been viewed by many as the next man up for Liverpool.

The bookies have him as the odds-on favorite to succeed Slot, according to Oddschecker, and it's easy to see why he would be a good fit.

The Spaniard is a Liverpool playing legend, he's already won a league title in Germany, and he has previous experience coaching Florian Wirtz, the big-money summer arrival who has only truly demonstrated his ability in fleeting moments in a red shirt.

If Alonso seemed like a wise appointment following Jürgen Klopp's departure in 2024, he looks even more so now.

The 44-year-old's flexible, possession-focused approach would suit the Reds' squad, with the players having to adapt to new roles on the fly at times this season because of various positional absences.

Building on that with a more cohesive structure could help Liverpool unlock stubborn defenses, and replicating the potent partnership between Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong that delivered such success at Bayer Leverkusen could bring goals in bunches.

Julian Nagelsmann

Germany v Ghana - International Friendly

With a World Cup campaign with Germany approaching, Julian Nagelsmann wouldn't arrive at Anfield until the start of next season.

However, Liverpool could confirm his appointment as soon as possible, bring in an interim coach in the meantime, and let the 38-year-old work his magic when the tournament has concluded.

Given how his Bayern Munich career ended, it's easy to forget that Nagelsmann won a Bundesliga title in his first season with the club.

Of course, that does give some slight echoes of Slot, with the German charging to a domestic trophy at the first attempt before seeing a notable regression in his second campaign.

Nagelsmann would bring the intensity of a Klopp squad without the rigidity in setup, in essence marrying the best elements of his compatriot's style with those of Slot's. He also seems to have unlocked the best of Wirtz for Germany, which would be a highly coveted quality.

This may depend on Germany's success on the world stage. However, since he is so young in coaching terms, it wouldn't be a surprise if he returned to the club scene following the tournament and left the door open for a return in the future.

Andoni Iraola

Bournemouth v West Ham United - Premier League

Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola is one of the most impressive managers in the Premier League, dealing with the club's best players being plucked from his grasp and still maintaining high levels of performance.

Despite such a frustrating personnel turnover, the Spaniard has Bournemouth in 11th, just three points off Chelsea in sixth and only seven points back from Liverpool in fifth.

Iraola likes his full-backs to push high, a tactic similar to that employed by Liverpool to great success over the last decade or so. Left-back Milos Kerkez will know exactly what the coach wants after the Hungary international made his name under Iraola's tutelage on the south coast.

Even better, with the Spaniard having confirmed he'll be leaving the Cherries at the end of the season, there won't be an expensive contract termination to negotiate, either.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was instrumental in hiring the 43-year-old for Bournemouth, and he'll surely be looking at bringing him to Anfield. However, with speculation growing that Hughes and chief executive Michael Edwards will leave the club at the end of their contracts in 2027, per the Independent, Iraola might be kept in the back pocket for later.

Luis Enrique

We now turn to the manager who has knocked Slot's Liverpool out of consecutive Champions League tournaments.

Luis Enrique has proved his quality with Paris Saint-Germain, helping the club transition from an era of stars into one focused on the collective. That approach delivered a long-coveted European title for the club.

Ligue 1 might not seem like a great proving ground for true managerial ability, with PSG's spending power giving them a significant leg up on the competition.

However, the Spaniard also won two league titles with Barcelona, not to mention the Champions League.

The big issue would likely be money. Liverpool has shown reluctance to extend the wage budget unless it's for a very good reason, and matching or bettering what Enrique earns in Paris might be unfeasible.

Simone Inzaghi

5 of 6
Al Hilal v Al Shabab - Saudi Pro League

After a successful stint in Serie A with Lazio and Internazionale, Simone Inzaghi is now in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal.

With questions circulating about his high-intensity approach, as Goal observed, he might be seeking a quick exit to a club that would appreciate such a philosophy. Enter Liverpool.

The Italian won Serie A with Inter in 2023-24 and took the club to Champions League finals in 2023 and 2025. While he wasn't able to get over the hump in Europe, getting to that stage in the competition at least gave the club a chance of lifting silverware. Slot can't yet say the same.

Inzaghi emphasizes expressive, attacking football with quick interchanges and a forward-thinking structure. That would suit the Reds down to the ground.

Much like Enrique, comparable wages might be an issue. However, with the mood apparently souring on his Al-Hilal tenure, he'll probably accept a pay cut for his first Premier League job.

Francesco Farioli

GD Estoril Praia v FC Porto - Primeira Liga

Francesco Farioli's star is on the rise. Having cut his teeth by improving clubs either languishing in mid-table or on the decline, he is now on the cusp of a league title with Porto.

He might not be in the recent Liverpool managerial mold, but it's hard to argue with results. With the Reds in a tricky moment of transition from one era to the next, Farioli seems like the perfect candidate to smooth that process while still getting vital wins.

When hiring Slot, Liverpool plucked a hot coaching prospect from a league outside the supposed European "top five." This ensured significantly lower wage demands, a huge amount of upside, and more license to cut bait if necessary.

The same tactic could be repeated with Farioli. The Reds will just hope that the good times last more than a single season.
